‘Best looking fighter since Ali’ spared court penalty for speeding

Dubbed the ‘best looking fighter since Muhammad Ali’ professional fighter, Patrick Donovan’s clean record escaped a knock out blow today after a judge struck out a speeding prosecution against him. At Gort District Court this Friday, Mr Donovan (23) of Clancy Park, Ennis, pleaded guilty to a speeding offence after he was detected driving at 162kmph in a 120kmph speed zone on October 6 last at Cullenagh More on the M18 linking Limerick to Galway. Currently being trained by former WBO middleweight world champion, Andy Lee, Mr Donovan accepted in court that he was driving in excess of the 120kmph speed limit and told Judge Mary Larkin that he was on his way to give a talk at a suicide prevention event in Co. Mayo. Recently, the 13-time Irish champion, Mr Donovan spoke about the loss of his best friend, aged 28 and first cousin, aged 25 to suicide last year. Ennis fighter turns pro with Top Rank and will be trained by Andy Lee

ENNIS welterweight Paddy Donovan has signed a deal to turn professional with US promoters Top Rank, while former World Champion Andy Lee will train and manage the 20 year old. From Clancy Park and a former student of Ennis CBS, Donovan has won 13 Irish titles and is a former junior world silver medallist. On Thursday afternoon Lee said he has everything it takes to win a professional world title. “He was a very successful amateur, he won everything there is to win, only five defeats in 166 fights. When you watch him box he is very exciting. He has all the ingredients to be a world champion as a professional boxer. You can see his style, how he fights, also his attitude. Traveller expresses frustration after judge throws out discrimination case

A traveller told his legal team, “I paid you three grand to take this to court and is this the result I get?” after a judge threw out his discrimination case against a North Clare pub and seafood restaurant. At Ennis District Court, father-of-six Patrick Donovan expressed his frustration for everyone in the court to hear, after Judge Fiona Lydon ruled that he was asked to leave Vaughan’s pub and seafood restaurant in Liscannor not on the basis of discrimination or because he was a Traveller. In words heard across the court room, Mr Donovan told his two strong legal team, “I paid you three grand to take this to court and is this the result I get here? What is my kids’ future?
