The late Pat Cleary

Death of former Clare Champion advertising manager

THE death has occurred at Mowlam Nursing Home in Ennis of Pat Cleary of Hazelgrove, Roslevan who was the advertising manager at The Clare Champion for many years. A native of Kilmihil, Pat travelled the world before he settled in Wales and became involved in the newspaper industry.  He was the advertising manager in charge of several titles there before returning to Clare. Pat was appointed to the ‘Champion by the then owner, the late Flan Galvin. This was a particularly challenging time for the paper, when new technology and an expanding workforce led to the ‘Champion becoming one of the dominant players among regional newspapers. This meant keeping ahead of the curve on all aspects of the business and Pat was very much a part of that. Clare People newspaper closes down

THERE was surprise and disappointment on Tuesday as it was announced that The Clare People newspaper had closed, after 14 years in business. It is understood that a meeting of its creditors is due to take place on August 23 at Hotel Woodstock and that the company will nominate Tom Murray of Friel Stafford as liquidator. The company has two directors, Emmet Moloney, a Clarecastle man who edited The Clare People for several years and Dómhnal Slattery, the hugely successful Ennis businessman, who is chief executive of aviation leasing company Avolon. The company last filed accounts covering 2017 and these show that it made a loss of €135,440 for the year. This was worse than 2016, when the loss had been just under €67,000. Liabilities exceeded assets, with the equity attributable to the owners a negative amount, of just over -€1.4 million The accounts showed that a sum of €747,283 was repayable to Mr Slattery, with this figure having increased …

The Clare Champion Nominated for Three Media Awards

The Clare Champion newspaper has for the first time received three nominations at the annual Local Ireland Media Awards. For the third successive year, Clare Champion journalist Peter O’Connell has been nominated for a Local Ireland Award. This year he is shortlisted for the second time in the Best Sports Story of the Year for an interview with Cooraclare’s Tom Morrissey. In the article Tom reflects on his life and times 25 years after he helped Clare win the 1992 Munster Senior Football Championship. Multi-award winning Clare Champion photographer John Kelly was also nominated this year for Photograph of the Year for an image taken of Meelick man Robin O’Connell. The Clare Champion has also been nominated in the Best Designed Newspaper of the Year category. The awards will be held on Thursday May 24 at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Athlone where the winners will be announced.

Death of former MD of Clare Champion

The death has taken place, peacefully at Ennis General Hospital, of the former Managing Director of The Clare Champion, Mr Flan Galvin of Fuinseog, Tobartaoscain, Ennis. A native of Kilnamona, Mr Galvin, who worked as a staff photographer in the ‘Champion, took over the running of the newspaper in 1969 following the death of his aunt, Mrs Nellie Galvin. Mr Galvin retired from business in 1994 and was succeeded at the helm by his son, John. His remains will repose at his residence this Tuesday from 5pm to 7pm arriving to Ennis Cathedral on Wednesday for Funeral Mass at 12.30pm followed by private cremation. Predeceased by his wife, Gemma who died last January, Mr Galvin is survived by his sons, Anthony, John and David; daughters-in-law, Cathy, Shelly and Kim; grandchildren, Sam and Caitlin, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
