THE Clare U/21 footballers will play Waterford in the Munster quarter-final in Miltown next Wednesday at 7.30pm. The winners will play Tipperary in Thurles on Wednesday March 18 in the provincial semi-final. The only change to the starting 15 from last Saturday’s semi-final replay win over Waterford is the return of Podge Collins at the expense of Barry Hartnett. Collins will start at centre-forward with Enda Coughlan wearing the number 15 jersey. Shane Brennan will start alongside his brother Gary at midfield while Coolmeen’s Cathal O’Connor underwent a fitness test at training in Cusack Park on Friday night and it is expected that he will be part of the match day panel. Sunday’s semi-final throws in at 3.30pm. The Clare v Kerry junior football semi-final starts at 1.30pm at the same venue. (Peter O’Connell) Clare 2-8 Waterford 2-8 IT felt like a defeat but Clare were eventually relieved to hold on for a draw in the Munster senior football quarter-final against Waterford in Cusack Park on Saturday evening. The replay will be in Dungarvan next Saturday, with a likely throw in time of 7pm. The Collins brothers, Seán and Podge, are also due to play with the Clare hurlers, in the Munster semi-final, the following day. Three minutes from the end of normal time in Ennis, Clare led by three points, 2-8 to 2-5 and it seemed that they would hold on for victory. However Waterford ran at Clare and kicked a trio of late points Shane Aherne (0-2) and top scorer, Paul Whyte, who kicked the equaliser. THE Clare senior footballers starting team and subs were named after training in Cusack Park on Thursday evening ahead of Saturday’s provincial quarter-final meeting with Waterford in Cusack Park. Four players will make their Munster championship debuts while Joe Hayes returns in goals at the expense of Pierce Deloughrey, who was in goals for the league campaign. Jamie Malone, Ciaran Russell and Martin O’Leary are pencilled in to make their championship debuts at midfield, wing back and in the full forward line respectively. Munster and All-Ireland U-21 hurling champions, Clare, got over the first hurdle in the 2014 title race when they proved too strong for Limerick, in a tie played in front of 6,063 patrons at sun-splashed Limerick on Wednesday. A powerful second half display proved too much for Limerick and the defending champions secured their place in the semi-final against Tipperary in mid-July early in the final quarter. There were fears for Clare in some quarters at the half-way stage when their lead was just two points, after playing with the aid of the fresh breeze. However, they dominated the second half and goals from Aaron Cunningham and Peter Duggan put paid to Limerick’s hopes of an upset. The Shannonsider’s goal came in the third minute of injury time, too late to cause problems for Clare. Waterford 6-9 Clare 4-12 CLARE exited the 2014 Munster minor football championship in a thrilling tie at Fraher Field in Dungarvan on Tuesday evening. Both teams were committed to all out attack and notched some superb scores during 60 minutes of terrific attacking football, although the defending, at both ends, was not quite as impressive. Waterford scored a goal with their first attack when Joe Allen netted 13 seconds after his team won the throw in. That set the tone for a magnificent spectacle. Come half time the home county had added three more goals and led 4-4 to 1-4. Darren Nagle scored Clare’s first half goal with a top class finish while Evan Courtney, Liam Madigan and Keelan Sexton pointed some great scores. The second half was full of goals with Sexton twice netting for Clare, while Evan Courtney added the remaining goal. It is possible to complete the Clare senior hurling championship in time for the winners to participate in the Munster club championship, a special meeting of Clare GAA was told on Tuesday night. For this to happen, however, it will depend on which clubs progress to the concluding stages and it may require some dual clubs playing every five days, the meeting, which was held at the County GAA headquarters in Clareabbey, was told. According to County GAA secretary Pat Fitzgerald, having the hurling championship completed in time to compete in the Munster competition “will be very tight’ . “It is our right to take part in the Munster championship and we have five or six teams who will give it a good rattle” board treasurer Bernard Keane said before asking clubs “to think outside the box one more time”.
