Old friends reunited in Mullagh

BACK in 1934 and 1935 three lifelong friends were born in Mullagh, Patrick Clancy, Joe Sexton and Pat Sexton (also known as Paddy Jim Dan). Many years ago Joe moved to England, Pat setted in Canada, while Patrick has lived all his life in the area where they grew up. Despite the distances between them, the three have managed to remain in contact and have all been in Mullagh this week, with Joe and Pat meeting up in person for the first time in 54 years. The trio met with the Clare Champion at their alma mater, Mullagh National School on Tuesday afternoon. Asked what school was like when they attended in the 1940s, two of the three, Pat and Joe answer in unison. “Tough,” as they recall the daily hardships of school life in their childhood. However all three remember having a teacher called Mrs O’Connell who they say was a lovely woman, while Patrick recalled taking drastic action …

Mourners gathered on Sunday at St Mary’s Church in Mullagh to say their last goodbyes to the popular member of the local community. As well as family, neighbours and friends the funeral mass was attended by representatives from both Irish President Michael D Higgins as well as Taoiseach Micheál Martin. Family photos, rosary beads and her prayer book, red lipstick, drivers license, a Cork flag as well as the Statue of Liberty were among just some of the items placed at the altar as symbols of her life. Restored road in pipeline

THE stretch of road from Mullagh to Miltown is to be fully restored after pipe-laying works are finished. The news was relayed to Deputy Michael McNamara who said Clare County Council and Irish Water are committed to the works. Irish Water’s main civil engineering contractors have recently excavated the Mullagh Cross to Mack’s Cross road to accommodate the laying of a replacement watermain. “The replacement watermain will replace a section of main that had become extremely problematic in recent years and will hopefully bring a reliable supply of water to Miltown and several other areas en route,” explained Deputy McNamara. The Independent TD acknowledged the issues caused for road users during the upgrade, but stressed that those are short term. “While the inconvenience to road users at present is regrettable, it is also temporary,” he noted. “In response to my representation on behalf of the people of Mullagh and Miltown Malbay, the Road Section of Clare County Council says residents …

West Clare counts the cost of Summer School cancellation

MILTOWN Malbay and the wider West Clare community continue to count the cost of the cancellation of an event whose economic value has been set at between €5 and €10 million annually. The Willie Clancy Summer School, whose cultural value is probably impossible to estimate, is among the casualties of the coronavirus restrictions. Its absence, on what would have been its 48th birthday, will be felt well beyond the Banner county. This year’s event had been expected to attract 1500 students  between July 4 and 12, with many thousands more attending for sessions, talks, seminars, dancing, concerts and the general festival atmosphere. Administrative Director Harry Hughes described the cancellation of this year’s Scoil Samhradh as “disappointing but inevitable” in the context of Covid-19. “We had been hoping things might improve in terms of the virus, but that wasn’t to be,” he remarked. “We are very disappointed for all of our students and tutors who attend year after year and the cancellation …
