Gardaí are currently at the scene of a fatal road traffic collision involving a van and a pedestrian that occurred at approximately 7:10pm on Saturday 4th November 2023 on the N67 at Moyasta between Kilrush and Kilkee in County Clare. The pedestrian, a woman in her late 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body has since been removed to University Hospital Limerick where a post-mortem examination will be conducted. No other injuries to persons was reported. A portion of the N67 at Moyasta is currently closed with local diversions in place. The services of Forensic Collision Investigators have been requested. Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward. Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the N67 in the Moyasta area between 7pm and 7:30pm are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí. FIFTY-five years ago this month, the West Clare Railway was trundling towards Moyasta from Shragh when the driver started pumping the breaks. The train was packed and en route to the County Fleadh in Kilrush, which will be held in the town again later this month. Among those on board were the U-14 Shragh Flagellate and Accordion Band. The Whelan brothers, Frank and Joe Joe, were seated on the train when it ground to a sudden halt. “We heard the hooter blowing and we just pulled up,” Frank recounted. “I stuck my head out the window. There was a cow on the track with the calf sucking the cow. We sat there until the cow walked away when the calf was finished.” Their adventurous journey to Kilrush wasn’t over. AN Bórd Pleanála has given the go ahead to plans that include the expansion of the museum at the West Clare Railway in Moyasta. Jackie Whelan, who is behind the establishment of the facility, said this week’s news is the culmination of a 16 year battle. “We got the news on Monday. Since we started looking for planning permission, including a road crossing and lights, it has taken 16 years to get this far,” he confirmed. “It means that we’re going building a new museum there now. It will be 180ft x 100ft. We have the largest fleet of railway antique vehicles in the country. It will on the other side of the road, towards Kilkee and Kilrush. We have full planning permission for a road crossing,” Mr Whelan added. The government closed the loss-making West Clare Railway in 1961. In 2010, An Bórd Pleanála rejected the expansion of the museum on grounds concerning road safety.

TWENTY  Clare projects have been approved for €121,000 in funding under the Built Heritage Jobs Leverage Scheme 2014. These projects will allow for a range of important conservation works to take place at protected buildings in all parts of Clare and will generate and support employment in the conservation and construction industries and in specialist trades, according to Labour TD, Michael McNamara. “Among the projects that will be supported include the former Moyasta Railway Station, Christchurch Church of Ireland in Spanish Point, St Cronan’s Church, Tuamgraney and the Mill Wheel in Ennis.The scheme is funded from the sale of the National Lottery but it is a condition of the scheme that taxpayers funds will at least be matched by private funding. “The County Council, to whom responsibility for administration of the scheme has been devolved in Clare, has assessed applications from owners/occupiers of protected structures and then submitted them for approval in principle by the minister,” remarked Deputy McNamara.  

COUNTY Clare is once again counting the cost of storm and flood damage after the spring tides brought their expected fall-out in many coastal areas on St Bridget’s Day. A  Met Éireann weather warning remains in place for this Saturday night. Many road were impassable this morning, while thousands of homes, mainly in  North and Mid-Clare, were left without power. The Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre remains closed all day due to hazardous conditions there. Things came to a head about 6 o’clock this morning, when the sea surged in at Lahinch Promenade and Quilty, while the Strandline wall in Kilkee  was  also damaged. This time round, Killimer and Moyasta were badly affected along the estuary. Flooding also occurred at Clarecastle bridge, as well as on the road at Bunratty. The river at the Black Weir Bridge, near the Clare Inn, burst its banks, while the main Ennis to Kildysart Road, at Ballicorrick also flooded.
