Kerry’s class too much for Clare….again

Kerry 3-21 Clare 1-7 The gulf in class between Kerry and most other counties in Munster was highlighted again this Saturday afternoon when, for the second year in a row, they scored a comfortable win over Clare in the Provincial minor final In bright sunshine at Pairc Ui Caoimh, the defending champions struck for 1-12 without reply in a fourteen minute spell in the opening half as they opened a fourteen point gap which put them into a commanding position and the result was never in doubt after this. They were slicker throughout the field and their teamwork proved much too sharp for their opponents After scoring the opening two points, Kerry were rocked in the eleventh minute when Clare got through for a goal which Thomas Kelly finished well to give the Banner side the lead for the only time in the game. Kerry’s response was devastating as , in the space of two minutes they had landed 1-1 …

Hurling teams named to face Cork

Despite intense speculation that Cian Dillon, Jason McCarthy and Jamie Shanahan would be named in the Clare senior hurling team to play Cork in the opening round of the Munster senior championship at Pairc Ui Caoimh on Sunday, neither have been included. All three had started in the team’s most recent challenge game—against Wexford—last week when David McInerney was at full back with Conor Cleary at centre back, the positions they also filled over a week earlier when Clare played Offaly at Cusack Park. While the management team headed by Donal Moloney and Gerry O’Connor have now named Cleary at full back with McInerney in the centre, it won’t be a surprise if they switch positions before the throw in. The team named for duty is Donal Tuohy (Crusheen); Patrick O’Connor (Tubber) – CAPTAIN, Conor Cleary (Miltown, St Josephs), Jack Browne (Ballyea); David Fitzgerald (Inagh-Kilnamona), David McInerney (Tulla), Seadna Morey (Sixmilebridge); Colm Galvin (Clonlara), Tony Kelly (Ballyea);Cathal Malone (Sixmilebridge), John …

Inagh-Kilnamona minors bridge 8 year gap

Inagh-Kilnamona 1-14 Kilmaley 1-10 Inagh-Kilnamona bridged a nine year gap when they captured the minor A hurling championship at the expense of their neighbours and great rivals Kilmaley at Cusack Park this Saturday afternoon. In a game played in very difficult weather conditions of bitterly cold and heavy rain showers, they dominated in the key areas. They led by two points at half time having played against the breeze and by the three quarter stage they had pushed their lead out to eight points and looked set for a comfortable win. Kilmaley then hit a purple patch and they scored 1-3 without reply to move to within two points of the winners with six minutes to play. The winners were clearly under pressure at this stage and with two minutes remaining they conceded a penalty. Goalkeeper Ronan Callinan came up to take the free but his effort was turned behind by his opposite number Eugene Foudy. Top scorer and the …

Minor footballers make Dublin battle all the way

Dublin 2-11 Clare 0-10 Dublin justified favouritism when overcoming Clare in this All-Ireland minor football quarter final at O’Moore park in Portlaoise this Bank holiday Monday afternoon but the Leinster champions will be the first to admit that they were asked many questions by Clare. Indeed when Clare reflect on this, their sixth game in this season’s championship, they will wonder what the outcome might have been had Dublin not benefitted from two fortunate goals. Five minutes into the second half a speculative effort from Dublin centre forward James Doran found its way to the net and it gave a huge lift to Dublin while it proved to be a huge blow to the Banner side Just a point separated the teams at the end of a low scoring first half with Dublin ahead on a score of 1-3 to 0-5. Clare could and should have been ahead based on the amount of possession they had enjoyed allied to the …

A disappointing day for Clare football

Kerry 2-21 Clare 0-3 Sunday July 2, 2017 is a date that will go into the Clare GAA history books but for all the wrong reasons A twenty four point defeat in the Provincial final is not something that Clare would have envisaged even if they entered today’s final at Fitzgerald stadium in Killarney as rank outsiders Clare scored first through midfielder Diarmuid Ryan who pointed from play in the opening minute but the writing was on the wall early in the game even if Kerry failed to convert a number of good scoring chances With centre forward David Clifford and wing forward Donal O’Sullivan causing huge problems for the Banner side, Kerry wouldn’t have been flattered by a much greater lead at half time by which time they had amassed ten wides, seven more than their opponents. The winners led by eight points at the interval when the score was 0-10 to 0-2, Clare’s second point having come from …

Clare recall only All-Ireland minor win twenty years on

Twenty years after making history when winning the All-Ireland minor hurling title for the first time in the county’s history, members of Clare’s victorious team from 1997 came together at Durty Nellies in Bunratty this Friday evening. They were joined by members of the management team including Kevin Kennedy (manager), Colm Honan and Louis Mulqueen to mention some. Team captain John Reddan returned from England for the re-union. It was a truly memorable occasion for Clare hurling followers as the county also won the senior All-Ireland title title in 1997. Ironically Clare haven’t won the All-Ireland minor title since then. The re-union took place at the end of a week in which the current county minor team qualified for the Provincial final which takes place on Sunday week when they will play either Cork or Tipperary who replay their semi-final on Monday evening.
