John Galvin was beguiled by the cultural wealth, fabulous food and warm hospitality of the Mediterranean island. When we think of Malta, perhaps nothing immediately springs to mind, except for vague notions of sandy beaches and blue Mediterranean waters. Malta in fact is an intriguing mix of cultures, having spend much of its history conquered by other countries, only gaining its independence in the 1960s. We explored the islands as guests of Visit Malta, to mark the start of direct Ryanair flights from Shannon to Valletta. We managed to pack a lot into three days but I’d suggest that the delights of the islands should be enjoyed at a more leisurely pace. With two flights a week, it would be easy to tailor the perfect trip. A new Ryanair route, which will fly directly from Shannon Airport to Malta, was launched yesterday (Sunday 27th March). The route is the first ever scheduled Ryanair service to Malta from Shannon Airport. It will operate twice weekly, each Thursday and Sunday, until the 27th October 2022. The service from Shannon Airport means that passengers will now have two airports in Ireland to depart from – Dublin or Shannon Airport – when planning their visit to Malta. A NEW Ryanair Shannon-Malta service is to commence in March of next year. It will be the first time Ryanair have run a Malta service from Shannon and it will operate twice weekly, each Thursday (departing Shannon at 5.25pm) and Sunday (departing Shannon at 10.40am), running from March 27 until October 27. Shannon Aerospace, operated by Lufthansa Technik, as part of its European aircraft overhaul network, has been formally renamed Lufthansa Technik Shannon. Shannon Aerospace (SAL) – a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lufthansa Technik AG – has thus joined Hamburg, Berlin, Budapest, Malta and Sofia as one of the six European base maintenance facilities in name, as well as in practice. The change in name coincides with the 25th anniversary of the company, which provides services to over 50 airlines and employs a workforce of more than 500. The renaming of the company is not yet visible everywhere and will be implemented step by step over the coming months. It will not entail any changes for customers in their current contracts, addresses or contact partners. Lufthansa Technik Shannon specializes in the overhaul of short- and medium-range aircraft. THE ripple effect in a weir near O’Briensbridge provided the inspiration for a local video games developer to make his debut as a writer and director for a new psychological horror short, his 11-minute film, Ensnared. It took Paddy Murphy just 20 minutes to write the script for this unusual short, which sees the lead role, John Galloway, played by Kevin Kiely Junior, on a descent into madness, as he battles with the very fabric of reality. “The story came from seeing the ripple in the water on the way to the weir. It came out of nowhere. “At first, I was unsure if it was something useable but, on reflection, a week later, I felt that if it flowed really well, it didn’t have to be structurally sound,” he said.
