Help make a child’s wish come true

Twenty-five local volunteers are needed on Wish Day, which takes place on Friday, March 9 to support Make-A-Wish Ireland’s flagship fundraising day. Volunteers are asked to give just a few hours of their time to sell wristbands in order to raise much-needed funds for the charity. Last year, in Clare alone, the charity made wishes come true for four children living with life-threatening illnesses, such as cancer, cystic fibrosis and Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Another teenager to benefit from Make-A-Wish is self-taught Ennis musician, Stephen Price. He had his wish granted a few years ago when he received a custom-made Pearl drum kit. Stephen was very patient while waiting for his kit to be built and spray painted to his specifications. His family and friends were invited to join him for the reveal and not only did Stephen receive his fantastic drum kit, but he was also invited to join one of his favourite bands, The Coronas for a sound check …

Evan wishing for help for charity swim

EVAN Cronin is organising a swimathon for February 4, which will hopefully see 100km covered by multiple swimmers in five hours. The Active Ennis Leisure Complex will be the venue for the swimathon, which will run from 12noon to 5pm. Make A Wish is the charity to benefit from funds raised. “The whole point is to get as many people from the community involved. We have five hours to get 100km done in two lanes. It’s quite a challenge, so the more people we get involved the better,” said Evan. He is preparing for an epic swim of his own later in the year. “I’m swimming or attempting to swim the English Channel in September. Everything is booked; it’s all set to go. I’ve pledged €25,000 to Make A Wish and we’ll have to do a load of events prior to the Channel swim itself to raise all that money for them.” The event on February 4 requires people to …

Old coins needed to help charities

With this week’s decision to withdraw the one and two cent coins from circulation, Clare families have been asked to donate all such loose change to charity. It is estimated that there is €35 million of these coins in homes and workplaces all over the country. A number of national charities, including umbrella group, Change for Charity and Make-A-Wish have already launched appeals but it is expected that local charities and community groups will be making their own pitch in the weeks ahead. Finance Minister, Michael Noonan received formal Dáil backing Central Bank’s National Payments Plan recommending the roll out nationally of the “rounding project” so as to reduce the need for one and two cent coins. The introduction of the plan comes following the overwhelming success of a nine-week project in Wexford in 2013, where transactions were rounded up or down to the nearest five cent. Some 250 businesses in the town participated in the project, everyone from supermarkets …

Andrew’s wish comes true

SEVEN-year-old Andrew Burke from Whitegate has had his wishes come true, as he received a number of special surprises on Saturday. The Make a Wish Foundation arranged for Andrew’s wish of owning a puppy to come true. Andrew suffers from neuphratic syndrome, a condition affecting the function of his kidneys. Andrew was put forward for the wish by his play specialist in Temple Street Children’s Hospital, Olive Kenny. As part of this, Andrew had to fill out a wish book, which asked him things such as if he could be anyone in the world, who would he be or if he could meet anyone in the world, who would he meet, as well as other things such as his favourite restaurant, which he said is the Half Barrel in Whitegate. He filled out every bit of it himself and when it came to choosing his number one wish, he said he wanted a puppy. Mum, Leanne, explained what happened on …
