Footballers finish league with emphatic win

Clare 3-12 Louth 1-11 FOLLOWING their seven point win over Louth in Cusack Park on Sunday, Clare guaranteed themselves division 2 status in the 2019 national football league. In what was their first home win of the campaign, Clare were never seriously troubled by Louth who have been relegated to division three. Clare finished on eight points in the table, three more than their 2017 total. The key results in this years campaign were away to Down and Cork, while they drew at home to Cavan and Tipperary. Goals at the start and end of the opening half were pivotal in helping Clare to a relatively comfortable win. Jamie Malone goaled after just 11 seconds, having been put through by a Gary Brennan free. The free was won by Cathal O’Connnor who was fouled immediately after the throw in. Just before the interval whistle, Clare wing forward, Kieran Malone slotted home his first goal of the campaign, which helped the …

Footballers well beaten in Drogheda

(Peter O’Connell) Louth 1-16 Clare 0-13 NOT scoring in the last 27 minutes of their six point division 3 NFL loss to Louth in Drogheda was one of the primary reasons behind Clare’s defeat to their Leinster opponents. When David Tubridy pointed his sixth score, eight minutes into the second half, Clare led 0-13 to 1-7 and they looked set for their second win within a week. However the loss of Cathal O’Connor to injury and the black card shown to Ciaran Russell, in the fourth minute of the second half, derailed Clare who lost their composure in the second half. They weren’t helped by a poor refereeing decision, 13 minutes into the second half, when Gary Brennan was clearly fouled by Adrian Reid. Seconds earlier the Clare midfielder had his jersey pulled back as he cut through. However neither a penalty or a free was awarded. That said once Louth got a grip in the second half, Clare were …

Hayes back after career threatening injury

BEFORE leaving the field at Miltown on Sunday, Joe Hayes journeyed towards his Wexford counterpart, Shane Roche, where they traded a few words that only goalkeepers are allowed in on. Ironically, it’s probably only the man defending the other net that can fully appreciate it when his opponent at the far end either saves a certain goal or worse, lets a soft one in. Goalkeepers spend a lot of time on their own, even during games and when the game-ceasing whistle blasts, they generally seek each other out. Just 12 months ago, Hayes endured a spell when it seemed that his days guarding the Clare football goalmouth were behind him. A hip operation didn’t initially heal as envisaged and the prognosis was somewhat bleak. “I suppose my career was in the balance. I didn’t know whether I was going to get back or would I ever get back to where I was. I missed out on the promotion. It was great …

Clare fifth in personal injuries awards league

Clare is the fifth highest in the national rankings of personal injury awards per head of population, for the first half of this year. During the first six months of 2014, the total compensation awarded to personal injury claimants by the Injuries Board increased by 22% to €144 million, according to a mid-year analysis undertaken by the board. The increase was largely attributable to a natural time lag between the spike in claims over recent years and the resolution of those claims. By 2013 the increase in new claims had begun to level off and this trend has continued in to 2014 with claims volumes declining 1.3% in the eight months to August. Average compensation remained relatively unchanged at just over €22,000. As fifth in the national ranking of awards per head of population, 168 awards were made to Clare claimants in the first six months of the year with a total value of €3.6m. The average award was €21,463. …
