Clare 0-16 Limerick 0-13 THE Clare footballers didn’t match the heights of their league form but they did just enough to edge past Limerick and into a Munster semi-final meeting with Kerry in Killarney in two weeks time. The game was played a pedestrian pace but Clare’s greater scoring spread eventually divided the teams. A minute into injury time Limerick’s Danny Neville reduced the deficit to just two points, 0-15 to 0-13 but a minute later Clare’s Jamie Malone put over his sides and the games final score. Limerick did mount a last attack but Joe Hayes was very solid under dropping ball which had been delivered by Peter Nash. Following a very poor first half, in the sides kicked 13 wides between them, Clare led 0-5 to 0-4. CLARE will be seeking their third successive championship win over Limerick when the ball is thrown in at 2pm in the Gaelic Grounds on Sunday. If the teams’ respective league displays are an accurate barometer, Clare will start as warm favourites. Four league wins were enough to secure promotion to Division 2, while Limerick were relegated to Division 4. When they met in their league tie in Newcastle West, Clare won 1-14 to 0-11, which followed their 0-15 to 0-13 championship win over Limerick in Ennis last May. Clare also defeated the Shannonsiders when they met in the 2012 Munster championship at the Gaelic Grounds, playing exceptionally well in the first half, although they faded badly in the second period. This weekend’s game will be the 39th Munster championship meeting between the counties with Clare winning 23 of those fixtures. WORN and poorly maintained wall paintwork, wood finishes and flooring in the theatre department of Limerick’s maternity hospital do not “facilitate effective cleaning” according to a report by the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA). The report also stated that cleaning staff in the theatre department and labour ward “have dual cleaning and catering duties” and that the cleaning resources allocated to the labour ward “did not provide assurances that the cleanliness of the physical environment can be effectively managed and maintained particularly during surges in activity”. Hospital management, however, said additional staff recruitment is nearing completion and should rectify these issues. An unannounced inspection, which took place at the University Maternity Hospital on January 27, found that “overall the environment in the theatre department was generally clean” and had “achieved 95% compliance in the most recent environmental audit carried out”. For the third time in recent weeks, Newmarket Celtic will face Janesboro from Limerick. This time they meet in the semi-final of the Munster Junior Cup at Carew Park on Sunday at 2pm. Their first meeting was in the quarter-final of the FAI Junior Cup, a tie played at McDonogh Park in Newmarket where the visitors were 1-0 winners. On Sunday last, Janesboro crashed out of that competition when they suffered a 4-1 loss to Sherrif FC from Dublin at the semi-final stage. The County Grounds in Doora was the venue for their meeting in the Munster Champions Cup final two weeks ago and here again, the Limerick side took the honours, the score this time being 2-1 after the Clare champions were in the lead. There was little between the sides in both games, so Newmarket supporters are confident the tables can be turned this weekend. Limerick 2-11 Clare 1-8 Before an attendance of 2,240 at the Gaelic grounds in Limerick this evening, the home team overcame Clare in the opening round of the Munster minor hurling championship. In what was a disappointing contest, two late goals helped Limerick to a merited win and a place in the semi-final on June 29. Clare must now face the losers of next week’s clash of Tipperary and Waterford as they go in search of a semi-final spot. Tipperary had a first round bue while Waterford suffered a four point loss to Cork this evening Playing with the aid of the wind, Clare had a dream start when Ian Murray goaled in the second minute but Limerick delivered a strong response in the form of three unanswered points in as many minutes to tie up the contest. A walk for all of Limerick’s third level students as a fundraiser for Pieta House will take place  next week. Mary Immaculate College Students’ Union, Limerick Institute of Technology Students’ Union, University of Limerick Students’ Union and Limerick Sports Partnership are behind the initiative. Organisers say the aim of the fundraiser is to show a united front in relation to the issues of mental health awareness and suicide prevention. The Walk and Talk takes place on Tuesday at 8pm sharp from The Potato Market, Merchant’s Quay. The event will be centred around the bridges of Limerick City to show solidarity for those we have lost and raise awareness for those who are struggling. The issues of mental health awareness and suicide prevention affect every community,” commented MISU vice president and event organiser, Alison Dervan. “The Student Unions of Limerick feel it is important to show we all stand together in raising awareness and much needed funds for Pieta House.”

WHILE not yet fully confirmed, the body recovered from the shore in Labasheeda on Tuesday is reported to be that of a Limerick man. It is believed that the man has been missing since late last year. The body was spotted shortly before 5pm on Tuesday by the Shannon Rescue Helicopter on the shore, close to the townland of Colmanstown. The helicopter had been on a training exercise. Kilrush RNLI and the Kilkee Coastguard Unit were called to help with the recovery operation while the helicopter returned from Shannon with two Gardai. Officer in Charge of the Irish Coastguard Unit in Kilkee, Martony Vaughan, outlined the groups role in the recovery. “We were tasked just before 5pm on Tuesday to assist the Gardai in Labasheeda at Colmanstown Castle with the recovery of a body from the shoreline. We proceeded to the area and we assisted the Gardai with the recovery. The casualty was about a kilometre from road access so …

FROM the moment the schedule of games for this season’s hurling league was published, today’s (Sunday) final group game between Shannonside neighbours Clare and Limerick was ear-marked as the tie that would decide who will be promoted to Division 1A for 2017. Clare, it must be said, were unlucky to be relegated from the top flight at the end of last season’s league, when they lost by the minimum margin to Kilkenny on successive Sundays. Limerick have been stuck in Division 1B for the past few years, falling narrowly at the final hurdle on a few occasions. They made some changes to their management team back in the autumn, bringing in Joe O’Connor as team trainer and appointing Tipperary man Dinny Cahill as team coach. O’Connor is widely recognised as a trainer and he filled that role for Clare when the Banner men won the All-Ireland title in 2013.
