TV debut for Kiltiernan pupils’ productions

Pupils of Kiltiernan NS appeared on RTE’s News2day and Six One News recently before holding special screenings of their work locally. The children produced dramas using puppets following a three-month artist-in-school programme. Hoping to be featured on News2Day, a children’s news programme, shown each day on RTÉ 2 at 4.25pm, the South Galway school invited RTE’s Western Correspondent Pat McGrath to the school to publicise the project funded by Galway County Council. “The school began this 10-week project last September with the puppeteer Tommy Baker,” explained teacher Bríd Fenlon. “The aim of the project was to produce a drama, based on a theme inspired by classwork, using puppets,” she continued. The children in infants and first class chose to retell the story of The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler in animation form, while second and third classes chose the legends of Setanta and Fionn from their history work. Kiltiernan date for influential inventors

TWO of the world’s most influential inventors visited a small South Galway school this week, prompted by a series of coincidences. All the pupils of Kiltiernan National School take part in the annual Write-a-Book project, run by Galway Education Centre. The children each write a book in just six weeks and it was one by Áine O’Rourke, about telecommunications, that led to Friday’s visit. While he is not a household name, Marty Cooper’s invention is something that almost every adult and many teenagers own and use multiple times per day. “On a recent visit to our school, Ciarán Cannon, Minister for Training and Skills at the Department of Education, launched our newly updated website.
