Stephen Hennessy wins president’s prize at Lahinch PRESIDENT Padraig McInerney’s prize was played for at Lahinch last weekend when the first three positions were filled by players who play off a handicap of 3. Stephen Hennessy was the winner with 38 points from David Fitzgerald who had a similar score while Conor Waters was third a point behind on 37. Austin Slattery (12) was next on 37 followed by Padraig Slattery (8), also on 37 The leading score on Friday was provided by Anthony Garrihy (5) with 34 points from Greg Young (6) with 33,Liam Pyne (6) with 31 and Brendan Day (11) with 32. Thomas Neenan won the gross on Friday with 28 points. THE grand finale of the social mixed (two ladies and two men) will conclude for the season next Tuesday, August 21 on the Castle Course from 1pm. It will be an 18 hole scramble stroke. The Shaw cup, a men’s singles v par competition was won by Kerrill O’Mahoney (6) with 5 up from Kevin O’Siochain (5) with 2 up, Aaron McNulty (5) with 2 up, Mark Barrett (8) with 1 up, David Givens (7) with 1 up and Diarmuid O’Mahony (9) who was all square. THERE was a huge entry for captain, Kevin O’Keeffe’s prize at Lahinch last weekend. Six handicapper Conor J. Hoey emerged as the winner following the nine hole play off when he returned 61 points to win by one from Jonathan Fennelly (14). Vivian Killeen (14), also with 60 points, was third followed by Michael Sullivan (16) with 59, Frank Doherty (10) with 59, Brian McCarthy (5) with 58 James Byrne (12) with 58, Tommy Dalton (13) with 57 Kerrill O’Mahony (4) with 57 and Michael O’Friel (4) with 56. Michael O’Kelly won the gross with 57 from Fergal Deasy with 56. The lady captain’s (Ann White) prize was played for at Spanish Point last weekend when the format was 18 hole stableford. Maura O’Boyle emerged as the winner with 35 points. Evanna Farrelly was second on 33 points with Helen McGrath, also with 33 points, in third spot followed by Yvonne O’Keeffe with 32 points. Kathleen Haugh with 19 points and Evelyn Kelly with a similar score won the nines. Eileen Murrihy won the best over 30 handicap section with 31 points. Karen White won the committee prize with 29 points, Valerie Shannon won the past captain’s prize with 29 points. The long drive was won by Yvonne O’Keeffe while Evelyn Kelly was nearest the pin. Maureen Clune with 21 points won the visitor’s section. By Seamus Hayes THE inaugural Munster final of the Irish Boys inter-club championship will take place in Tramore golf club on Tuesday July 31. Among the eight clubs from across the province competing, will be two from Clare. Ennis and Lahinch will be the two representatives from North Munster and they will join Waterford Castle and Youghal (South Munster), Tralee and Ballybunion (West Munster), Mahon and Kinsale from South Munster Following proposals at provincial level last November, the event was added to the GUI Championships calendar for 2018. The new event is a strokeplay team event with five golfers playing for each team. Based on handicaps, the event differs from the Fred Daly trophy with the best three nett stableford scores counting towards each teams total.  The winning team will go forward to the All-Ireland finals which will also be played at Tramore at the end of September.  Play in Tramore gets underway at 11am with the final group of golfers teeing …

Valerie leads Irish team By Seamus Hayes ENNIS woman Valerie Hassett will captain the Irish team for the European senior ladies team championships in September. The team will be led by recent Irish senior women’s close champion Suzanne Corcoran (Portumna) and includes a host of experience including 2016 British Senior Women’s Champion Laura Webb and Gertie McMullen (The Island) who has won both the Irish Senior Women’s Open and Close Championships in the past.The championship takes place in Mont Garni Golf Club, near Charleroi,from September 4 to 8. Barton Shield BALLYNEETY golf club in Limerick hosted the north Munster section of the Barton shield last weekend when six Clare clubs were in action. In round one Ennis beat Roscrea, Lahinch beat the host club and East Clare beat Dromoland while Kilrush went down to Adare Manor and Woodstock lost out to Limerick. Shannon beat Lahinch in round two but Ennis lost to Castletroy and East Clare went down to Limerick. …

By Seamus Hayes Tom makes history in Kilrush HISTORY was made at Kilrush Golf Club at the weekend, when Tom Prendeville won the captain’s prize for the third year in a row. The local man who plays off a handicap of 15 returned a score of 103 and had three strokes to spare over Mark Shannon (7) who returned 106.33in the race for captain Cyril Kelly’s prize. They were followed by John O’Sullivan (20) with 107. 67, Tom Cleary (20) with 2109.67 and Colm Murphy (19) with 11o.33. Jim Young junior (5) won the gross with 123 whle the leading qualifier was Anthony Gilmartin (20) with 64. Greg Young (6) won category 1 with 114.00, Finbarr McMahon(17) won category 2 with 110.67 while Sean Moran (22) won category 3 with 70. Huge turnout for Dave Foley testimonial at Dromoland By Seamus Hayes THE David Foley testimonial day on Friday was a huge success. After twenty years as the professional at Dromoland, Foley is leaving to take up a position in Scotland. The winners of the team event with an impressive 121 points were Majella and Ellie Cotgreave, Mary Anne Sheils and Moira Cunningham.. they had ten points to spare over John O’Shaughnessy, Tom O’Sullivan, Ellie and Tony Cotgreave who were two ahead of Nigel and Alex Frost. Fergal and David Kennedy. In fourth spot with 108 were Mick O’Shea, Michael Flannery, Barry Walshe and Don barrett while the fifth placed team comprised David Fitzgerald, Shay O’Vallaghan, Eoin Garrahy and Jeeves Kochhar and they had 105 points.
