Jayden on road to recovery after mum’s partner donates kidney

A Killaloe mother-of-three has revealed the surreal moment watching her partner’s kidney being transported in a box for her son’s kidney before his vital transplant operation. Nuala Conway admitted she got upset outside Beaumont Hospital in Dublin after experiencing an emotional rollercoaster over the last year as she and her partner, Denis Costelloe tried to source a living donor for Jayden (13), who was on dialysis due to kidney failure. “I really broke down when I went out to get some fresh air after Jayden was put to sleep in theatre and saw the surgeons arrive from Beaumont Hospital with Denis’s kidney in a red box. “It was just crazy and surreal. We recognised the surgeons from Beaumont. Home dialysis is transforming the lives of chronic kidney disease patients in the Mid-West, improving quality of life through efficient treatment modes and schedules that can be adapted to people’s domestic and working lives, and reducing frequency of hospital visits for the patient. At a time when some 85-90% of the 200-220 patients receiving dialysis treatment for chronic kidney failure are doing so ‘in-centre’ at University Hospital Limerick, making it one of Ireland’s busiest haemodialysis services, the hospital’s Department of Renal Medicine team continues to promote home-based dialysis as the best option for patients requiring the treatment. Marie is Clare’s golden girl

LAHINCH woman Marie O’Connor won three gold medals and two silver at the European Transplant and Dialysis Sports Championships in Finland recently. Marie, a kidney transplant recipient, won gold for her gross score in the ladies’ open category, her third gold at this year’s championships. She said, “I am honoured and thrilled. I wasn’t expecting the gold. I played against women from Germany, Italy and Denmark and all were lovely women. My donor is the person I compete for.” Marie won two gold medals in the petanque singles and doubles event. “It’s great to be here with people in the same boat. I’ve met some fabulous people this year. I hope we will all be taking part again next year. My number one gold is my donor and I am deeply grateful to them and to all my supporters at home,” she said.
