Kilrush man found guilty of manslaughter

After deliberating for over three hours a jury in the Central Criminal Court acquitted a 23 year-old Kilrush man of murder but convicted him of manslaughter. Robbie Walsh, (23), of Island View had pleaded not guilty to murdering 25-year-old Karl “Gobbo” Haugh at Marian Estate, Kilkee in the early hours of August 6, 2017. The jury took over three hours to return a unanimous verdict of not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter. Ms Justice Carmel Stewart thanked the jurors for their time and attendance and excused them from further civic duty for five years. She remanded Walsh in custody and ordered a report from the Probation Service pending sentence hearing on March 25 next. Earlier, the jurors had sought clarification from Ms Justice Stewart about the verdicts open to them. Murder accused was in ‘life or death situation’, defence say

A murder accused was in a “life or death situation” and acting in self-defence on the night he stabbed a man who later died, a jury at the Central Criminal Court has been told. Robbie Walsh, (23), from Island View, Kilrush has pleaded not guilty to murdering Karl ‘Gobble’ Haugh,(25), in the Marian Estate in Kilkee on August 6, 2017. Patrick Gageby, SC, prosecuting, and Brendan Grehan, SC, defending, made their closing arguments in the case before Ms Justice Carmel Stewart and a jury on Monday. The court has previously heard Robbie Walsh and his cousins, Mitchell Walsh and Clinton Walsh, also from Kilrush, went to the Marian Estate on the Saturday night of the August Bank Holiday weekend in 2017 to smash up Mr Haugh’s car. It also heard Mitchell Walsh carried a knife, while Robbie Walsh and Clinton Walsh, or all three, carried metal bars. Kilrush man charged with Kilkee murder

GARDAÍ have charged a 21-year-old Kilrush man with the murder of Karl Haugh at the Marian Estate in Kilkee last August. Detective Garda Padraig Frawley gave evidence of charging Robbie Walsh of 20 Island View, Kilrush, with murder, at a sitting of Ennis District Court on Wednesday. In reply to the murder charge, Mr Walsh said, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to do it”. Mr Walsh, who is represented by Patrick Moylan, solicitor, had been charged with assault, intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm to Karl Haugh at Marian Estate on Sunday, August 6. However, on Wednesday, Inspector Tom Kennedy, prosecuting, said the State was withdrawing that charge and it was struck out. Judge Patrick Durcan pointed out that it had no jurisdiction to deal with bail in the case of a murder charge. Mr Moylan outlined that a bail application would be made to the High Court. “Nobody was meant to die that night”

A 21 year-old Kilrush man charged with assaulting the late Karl Haugh causing him serious harm told gardaí after caution, “Nobody was supposed to die that night”. Robbie Walsh, of 20 Island View, Kilrush appeared before Judge Marie Keane at Ennis District Court this Tuesday morning charged with assault, intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm, to Karl Haugh at Marian Estate, Kilkee on Sunday, August 6. During the brief hearing, Garda David King gave evidence of arresting and charging Mr Walsh at 5.53pm on Monday. He said having been cautioned Mr Walsh made the following response, “nobody was meant to die that night”. An application was made by solicitor Edel Ryan of Patrick Moylan Solicitors for free legal aid and this was granted. An application for bail was refused by Judge Keane following a bail hearing. She directed that while on remand that all appropriate intervention regarding drug addiction be made.

Third man arrested in Kilkee fatal stabbing

A third man has been taken into custody by gardaí investigating the fatal stabbing of 25 year-old Karl Haugh from Kilkee. Mr Haugh, a father of one, sustained fatal stab wounds during an altercation at Marion Estate at approximately 1.15am on Sunday morning. He was removed to University Hospital Limerick where he was pronounced dead. Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis has since carried out a post-mortem examination. The man, in is 20s, was arrested in the West Clare area and is detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at Ennis Garda Station. This brings to three the number of people in custody as part of the investigation. Two others, also in their 20’s, are detained at Kilrush Garda Station. Members of the Clare Divisional Crime Scene Investigation Unit carried out a technical examination of the scene while gardaí have also appointed a Garda Liaison Officer to the Mr Haugh’s family.
