Clooney-Quin reach first senior final in 75 years

Clooney-Quin 0-16 Clonlara 0-14 Seventy five years after they last appeared in the Clare senior hurling championship final, Clooney-Quin are one step away from Clare’s top hurling honour. A contribution of 0-13 from Peter Duggan played a key role in their victory in this evening’s semi-final win over a fancied Clonlara side who had contested the finals of the past two years. In a game in which they were never behind, Clooney-Quin emerged as deserving winners but there was a period in the final quarter when their followers were nervous as Clonlara landed five points in a row to come to within a point of their opponents. Jimmy Corry gave them the lead inside the first minute and Peter Duggan struck for his first in the second minute before Ian Galvin opened Clonlara’s account. The sides were level four points in the first half at the end of which Clooney-Quin were two points clear, 0-9 to 0-7 having played with …

Doora-Barefield’s storming finish leads to a replay

Clarecastle 4-13 Doora-Barefield 4-13 When Oisin Casey landed his tenth point, a minute from the end of normal time, Clarecastle led this evening’s under 16 A hurling final by seven points. Seconds after this score ‘at least two minutes of additional time’ was signalled and Clarecastle followers were satisfied that the title was on the way to their club for the first time in sixteen years. Doora-Barefield still believed that they could get something from the final and a goal from their captain Adam Mungovan in the 60th minute gave them hope. As the game went into the second minute of the two indicated, Bruce Piggott pointed a 25m free. They won possession from the puckout and attacked again and Fionn O’Brien gave their followers plenty to cheer about when he blasted to the net for the leveller. There wasn’t time for anymore and mapgie supporters left Cusack Park somewhat shellshocked while Doora-Barefield followers were, understandably, delighted. The big attendance …

The way is clear for the quarter finals of the Clare senior hurling championship and the pairings will be decided on Monday evening at GAA headquarters in Clareabbey. When the draw is made on Monday they will be in one pot with the other pot holding the names Ballyea, Cratloe, Tulla and Clooney-Quin. Despite lining out without the injured Sean Collins and Cathal McInerney, Cratloe proved too strong for St. Josephs and ran out with a sixteen point winning margin. The first half was well contested but Cratloe’s experience saw them pull away in the last quarter on a day when teenager Billy Connors was their top scorer, finishing with 0-10 to his credit. Clare minor Diarmuid Ryan landed 0-4 as did Clare senior player Conor McGrath. Meanwhile defending champions Ballyea had to battle all the way …

Another dis-appointing day for Clare hurling

The opening of the renovated Pairc Ui Chaoimh brought no joy for Clare hurling as both the county senior and minor hurling teams had their seasons ended when defeated by Tipperary and Galway at the quarter final stage Tipperary 0-28 Clare 3-16 So near and yet so far once again for the for the Clare senior hurlers once again. Dreams of championship success are over for another year after they suffered a three point loss to defending All-Ireland champions Tipperary at the newly re-built Pairc Ui Chaoimh in Cork. Before an attendance of 28,567, missed chances and mistakes at vital times cost Clare dearly. After a poor start which saw them trail by six points after fifteen minutes, the Banner side fought back helped by a brace of Aaron Cunningham goals in as many minutes. Earlier they had a Conor McGrath goal disallowed when he was penalised for over carrying. In the minutes before half time a couple of mistakes …

A do or die game in Pairc Uí Chaoimh

CLARE and Tipperary both know Saturday could be their last outing for the 2017 season. “It’s a do or die game for both. We feel we have a huge amount we can improve upon from our last performance, in terms of our defence set-up, our puck-out strategy, our shot selection from the middle third and our decision-making as a whole,” joint team manager Gerry O’Connor said ahead of the panel’s second last training session. “Ultimately, if you look at the amount of scoring opportunities we created against Cork, they were significant and we didn’t take a high enough percentage of them,” he added. He conceded that David McInerney’s chances of playing are slim. “At best, his chance is 50-50. Right now we are considering him as unavailable. Anything else will be a bonus. We will know more following training.” McInerney is the only serious injury worry. “There are the usual knocks and bruises following our game in training on Sunday …
