Man arrested in connection with death of Clare club hurler in Greece

Greek police are questioning an Irish man in connection with the death of Clare club hurler, Niall O’Brien, on the island of Ios yesterday, Monday, reports David Raleigh. Mr O’Brien, 22, from Castletroy, Limerick, who played with Broadford GAA, died after being struck by another male, police said. The alleged assault took place on the island’s largest town, Chora, which has become popular with Irish tourists. A 20-year old man was arrested by police and is being questioned on suspicion of striking Mr O’Brien “with his hands”, causing his death. A police information release sent to this reporter stated the alleged assault resulted in Mr O’Brien “falling on the road”. Mr O’Brien was “transported by ambulance to the Health Centre of the island” where he was pronounced dead. Ace efforts from Wesley in Greece

A KILLALOE based tennis coach, who has introduced the sport of tennis to residents of a Greek refugee camp, is urging the public to support charities like Lighthouse Relief who are helping those fleeing war torn countries. Wesley O’Brien, a coach at the Killaloe Tennis Club said while the issue may have gone off the news cycle, it is still a major international crisis that needs continued support. He said rather than sitting on a beach in Lanzarote he wanted to do more with his skills and wanted share the joy of tennis with those less fortunate. In 2018 he got in touch with a number NGOs and was directed to Lighthouse Relief, who work with refugees from Syria, Iraq and Turkey. The charity has a base on the island of Lesvos where they have a first responder team who help migrants fleeing by boat. Clare man killed in Greece wildfires

BRIAN O’Callaghan-Westropp, who was originally from the Shannon/Newmarket area, has died as a result of the wildfires in Greece this week. Brian and his new wife Zoe Holohan had travelled to Greece following their wedding on July 19. At the time of writing Zoe is receiving treatment in hospital for burns. On Wednesday the death toll from the fires already exceeded 80 and was expected to rise further. In a statement the Holohan and O’Callaghan-Westropp families said they “would respectfully appreciate privacy at this time as we grieve and as Zoe makes her recovery.” Brian worked for a Dublin company called Ready Chef Ltd while he was secretary of Blood Bikes East, a charity that provides an emergency medical transport service between the hospitals in Dublin and the Greater Leinster area.
