Strong finish gives Limerick deserved victory

Limerick 2-11 Clare 1-8 Before an attendance of 2,240 at the Gaelic grounds in Limerick this evening, the home team overcame Clare in the opening round of the Munster minor hurling championship. In what was a disappointing contest, two late goals helped Limerick to a merited win and a place in the semi-final on June 29. Clare must now face the losers of next week’s clash of Tipperary and Waterford as they go in search of a semi-final spot. Tipperary had a first round bue while Waterford suffered a four point loss to Cork this evening Playing with the aid of the wind, Clare had a dream start when Ian Murray goaled in the second minute but Limerick delivered a strong response in the form of three unanswered points in as many minutes to tie up the contest. McGrath’s hat trick too much for Tipperary

By Seamus Hayes Clare 4-15 Tipperary 0-20 Clare’s ability to get through for goals helped them to a comfortable win over Tipperary in this round three Allianz hurling league tie played before an attendance of 8,133. Full forward Conor McGrath hit three, the first after ten minutes putting his side five clear. Tipperary had the margin down to a three points when McGrath hit for a second and this was quickly followed by a John Conlon goal which left Clare 3-7 to 0-8 ahead at half time. Ten minutes before the break, Clare lost Darach Honan to injury and this led to the introduction of Podge Collins who went onto play a key part in the win. Tipperary put on the pressure after the break and they outscored Clare 0-6 to 0-1 in the first fifteen minutes of the new half. A day to remember for Clare hurling

By Seamus Hayes Clare 5-16 Cork 3-16 What a day for Clare hurling. All-Ireland senior hurling champions for the fourth time in the county’s history after a truly memorable game. In the lead up to Saturday’s replay with Cork, analysists everywhere argued that Clare would need at least a goal if they were to win the LiamMcCarthy cup for the first time since 1997. Another of the big debating points for the past two weeks concerned whether or not Clare would make a change to the starting line up. Two hours before throw in time news emerged that nineteen year old Shane O’Donnell would start ahead of Darach Honan ahead of full forward. to say that he repaid the faith the management showed in him would be an understatement.
