FORMER Riverdance star Breandán de Gallaí will be bringing his latest show to Clare next month. De Gallaí has been at the forefront of pushing the boundaries of traditional and contemporary Irish dance in Ireland for over three decades. His role as a principal dancer with Riverdance, which spanned more than seven years, saw him tour the globe with numerous prestigious performances including dancing for King Hussein of Jordan, the Emperor of Japan and Princess Diana. Next month, Clare audiences are in for a treat as the former Riverdancer will be bringing his show “Walls Talk” to Glór, Ennis, on March 16, as part of a 10 venue tour across Ireland. Inspired by the phrase ‘if these walls could talk’, the show features de Gallaí’s solo dance routines set against songs from the golden era of jazz and blues, performed live on stage by jazz singer Gina Boreham. A DYNAMIC weekend of musical activities for young traditional and folk composers and songwriters is on the cards for Glór next month. The event, taking place from March 11 to 13, is part of a national series of Masterclass & Concert Programmes with Dónal Lunny. The legendary musician will be in Ennis with his nine-piece traditional music ensemble, Atlantic Arc. Young musicians between the ages of 14-18 who live in Clare are now invited to make an application for this innovative programme. The event will include a Friday evening and Saturday daytime masterclass. On Sunday, there will be a ‘behind the scenes’ technical experience, followed by the evening concert with Atlantic Arc. Following the official opening on Friday 30th November 2001 by Minister Síle de Valera before a specially invited audience, over 60 great Clare performers – three generations of the best players of Clare music took to the glór stage, including Tony McMahon, Paddy Canny, James Cullinan, Tony Linnane, Noel Hill, Siobhan Peoples, Martin Hayes, Josephine Marsh, Maura O’Connell, the Tulla Ceili Band, and the Kilfenora Ceili Band, to present a night of music such as has never been heard before. With Martin Hayes and the Sawdoctors performing over the next two nights, without doubt the opening weekend of glór was one of the best three nights of music ever staged in County Clare. The opening night concert was broadcast in full by Clare FM, and RTÉ Radio One transmitted the second half. Built at a cost of €8.5m, glór was the largest investment in the Arts in County Clare. A HUNDRED years ago the world came out of the darkness of World War One and Prohibition and celebrated in style in the Golden years of the 1920s. Now, as the entertainment industry and theatre in particular emerges from the confines of Covid, Ennis Players will celebrate the All-Ireland drama finals in the manner of the Roaring 20s. ‘Drama at Ennis’, the 2021 All-Ireland One Act finals will be staged in glór from December 3 to the 5. “The finals have been postponed from 2020 and now it is time to celebrate and embrace a wonderful weekend of amateur drama,” said Bernie Harten of the Ennis Players. “Participating groups and their supporters will be welcomed to glór, where they will play to an appreciative audience, deprived of theatre for too long,” she added. ON Tuesday next, November 23 at 7.30pm Glór will host an event entiled My Defining Moments: A Conversation with Shane O’Donnell. The event will also be live streamed. It will be hosted by journalist and present Paul Collins, and will feature an in-depth conversation with Clare hurler and microbiologist Shane O’Donnell, about his defining moments from his sporting careers, research career and life to date. Famously an almost unknown O’Donnell scored 3-3 in the 2013 All-Ireland Hurling Final, while he will also discuss his studies at Harvard University as a Fulbright Scholar, his balancing of his sporting and research career, as well as his recent concussion and his work at Eagle Genomics amongst other things. It will touch on the opportunities and challenges Shane has faced in his life to date, the continuing role of research in these areas, and his advice on lessons learned for others following his journey. A FESTIVE concert with a jam-packed line up of talent from Clare and beyond will raise funds to support the vulnerable this Christmas. For the past few years campaigner Josie O’Brien has organised a concert in glór to raise awareness of homelessness while also raising funds to purchase food hampers for those in need. Last year’s event was cancelled due to Covid-19, however the ‘Christmas Choir’ concert will return on December 18 of this year. Luka Bloom will feature as special guest alongside plenty more acclaimed talent, including Mike Hanrahan; The Fiddle Case; Eoin O’Neill and Clara Buteler; Sarah Ryan; Anne Rynne; Trevor Hansbury; John Fennell (Sean Nós); Sara Ryan (Sean Nós); Steo Wall: Fay Moloney and the Cork Penny Dinners High Hopes Choir with more guests to be announced. The Iron Annie Cabaret will be travelling the country in style, with 15 dates scheduled this autumn including right here in Ennis on Thursday, November 18. The show is based on Luke Cassidy’s critically acclaimed debut novel which The Irish Independent described as “probably the most ambitious and well-written debut this year.” Now, as producer, Luke Cassidy is bringing that same story to the stage. ENNIS singer and guitarist Síomha has released her new single ‘Spéir Rua’ (Red Sky) ahead of this weekend’s performance in glór. The single gives a first glimpse of what to expect from her upcoming album ‘Infinite Space’ which is due for release in 2022. Speaking of the track, Síomha says, “Spéir Rua is a love song for the landscape of the West of Ireland. It was inspired by many late night drives after gigs when I lived right on the West Coast at the edge of The Burren. “As I got closer to home, I was lucky to witness the beautiful red blaze of the morning sky. Nature was giving her best performance and in those moments it felt as though I was the only spectator.
