Water flow at Parteen Weir unchanged

The ESB has confirmed that  the flow of water down the River Shannon through Parteen Weir will remain at 375 cubic metres per second today (Thursday). The levels in Lough Derg are monitored on a daily basis and ESB will advise if that flow is likely to increase. With further rain expected, the level of water flowing down the Shannon may increase over the next number of days. This level of water flow is likely to lead to associated flooding of roads, land and property in the vicinity of the Shannon downstream of Parteen Weir, including the areas of Springfield, Montpellier, Castleconnell, Mountshannon (Annacotty) and the University of Limerick. ESB is continuing to monitor the situation and is liaising with the relevant county councils.

Army helps in flood defence efforts

The Army is this morning (Wednesday) helping in the flood defence efforts in the Springfield area of Clonlara. This follows a dramatic rise in water levels  on Tuesday evening in the Lower River Shannon south of Parteen Weir, resulting in the encroachment of floodwaters on a small number of properties in Springfield. A number of roads are now impassable in the area including the main road from Mount Catherine (De Courcy) Bridge to Cottage Cross. Several properties have been isolated as a result and the affected homeowners will be assisted with access to and from their properties by Clare Fire and Rescue Service and Clare Civil Defence. Clare County Council will be liaising with the ESB, An Garda Síochána and local property owners throughout today. The council anticipates that water levels will rise further during the day and is monitoring and evaluating the situation on an ongoing basis.

The ESB has had to steadily increase  the flow of water down the old River Shannon at Parteen Weir, it was confirmed this morning (Tuesday). The flows down the old Shannon River downstream of Parteen Weir have been increased to 375 cumecs (metres cubed per second) this morning, from a rate of 315 cumecs yesterday. As the water in Lough Derg continues to rise, an increase in the level of water flowing down the old River Shannon will be required over the next number of days. This increased volume of water is likely to lead to associated flooding of roads, land and  property in the vicinity of the old River Shannon downstream of Parteen Weir including the areas of Springfield, Montpellier, Castleconnell, Mountshannon (Annacotty) and the University of Limerick. ESB to release water at Parteen Weir

Limerick City and County Council has been informed by the ESB of plans for further significant releases of water from Parteen Weir. The areas most at risk of experiencing flooding are Montpelier, Castleconnell and the Mountshannon Road, Lisnagry. The local authority is liaising with householders in these areas that were affected by the 2009 flood and is putting additional measures in place to help alleviate the effects of flooding. At this time, there is no expectation of flooding in Limerick City but the council is monitoring the situation on an ongoing basis. The council is advising property owners in flood-prone locations, and motorists, to exercise vigilance over the coming days. The Council is also calling on property owners and landowners to ensure that drains and gullies on their property …
