Rescue chopper evacuates fisherman

The Shannon-based Coast Guard helicopter has completed the evacuation of a crewman from an Irish fishing vessel located 160 miles West off Loop Head. The injured man has been taken on-board the Coast Guard helicopter, R115 and will be transferred to University Hospital Limerick where it was due to arrive at midday. The operation was coordinated by the Coast Guard Marine Rescue Centre in Valentia who were initially alerted by the fishing vessel, via HF (hi frequency long range) radio. Weather conditions on scene were described as challenging with north westerly winds exceeding 30 Knots but well within the operating limits of the Coast Guard helicopter.

Body of fisherman recovered from Galway Bay

A multi-agency air and sea rescue operation was mounted in Galway Bay yesterday evening after a fisherman was reported missing. Following an intensive search the man was recovered from the water and removed to Galway University Hospital where he has since died. The Irish Coastguard was alerted at about half past three by a local fisherman who came across a local fishing boat with its engine running and no one on board, in an area south of Tawn Island off Maree, Oranmore, south of Galway Bay. Galway RNLI Lifeboat launched from Galway Docks and were joined by the Aran Island All weather RNLI Lifeboat, the Irish Coastguard Helicopter from Shannon and the Casla Bay Coastguard Lifeboat. Within an hour they were joined in the search by nine local fishing boats from across the bay. RNLI launches to assist fisherman

The Lough Derg RNLI came to the assistance of a fisherman who got into difficulty on the lake on Sunday evening. The lifeboat was launched just before 6pm when the man’s boat became wedged on a rocky shoal in Youghal Bay. The fisherman, uninjured and wearing a lifejacket,  was taken on board the lifeboat while his boat was then taken off the shoal and towed to Youghal Bay. Lough Derg RNLI Deputy Launching Authority Peter Kennedy said boat users should bring charts with them and know the areas close to shore marked as un-navigable.

Fisherman rescued after falling into sea

A fisherman, believed to be a non-national but living in Clare, has been rescued after he fell into the sea near Spanish Point. The man, in his 40s, was fishing off rocks  when he fell into the water. The Kilkee unit of the Irish Coast Guard and an ambulance were sent to the scene after members of the public raised the alarm. One passerby waded out into the waves with a lifebuoy and threw it to the man who was safely brought ashore. The man, who was shaken after his ordeal, was uninjured.
