GARDAÍ in Clare are warning the public to be wary of potential scam phone calls or texts. This comes after a quick-thinking North Clare resident foiled an attempt by a scam artist to get their financial details over the phone. According to gardaí the man received a phonecall from a 0043 number last week. The person on the other end said they were from Visa security in Dublin and that at 6 am someone had bought a phone on eBay for €150 while at the same time €1,100 was transferred from his account to Brazil. The person asked had they given their card details to anyone. Luckily the Clare man realised the call was suspicious and hung up. In advising people to be wary, Crime Prevention Officer Sergeant Triona Brooks revealed that she has also been unsuccessfully targeted by scammers. Treasurer of the Clare GAA County Board, Bernard Keane has admitted that the board’s finance are “serious” prompting them to acquire “a line of credit of €200,000″. The financial scenario was outlined to delegates attending this week’s meeting of Clare GAA and the meeting unanimously supported a request from the executive to sanction the borrowings. Treasurer Bernard Keane said, “This is a necessity. There is no income until July. The finances are very serious at the moment”. Secretary Pat Fitzgerald explained that the board hoped that the borrowings will be paid back before October. “All outgoings are between January and April and monies don’t start to flow until July. We have acquired similar resolutions from Croke Park and from Munster Council,” he added. Outlining the expenditure to date on county teams, the board treasurer said this amounted to €153,244.27. REDUCING the rate of €1.30 per hour that applies in most of the main car parks in Ennis would have serious financial consequences for Clare County Council. That was the message from Director of Services Ger Dollard at Tuesday’s meeting of the Ennis Municipal District. Mr Dollard claimed that research showed that a drop of ten cents would result in a loss of income of in the region of €80,000 to €90,000. He was responding to Councillor Clare Colleran Molloy who put forward a motion asking that for a trial period a universal parking fee of €1 per hour be introduced throughout the town to enable a comparison with the same period one year previously. A written reply to her motion from the Council’s Barry Keating stated, “Parking income is an integral part of Clare County Council’s budget and is necessary in order to balance the resources available and the demands that are being place on the Council.
