LADIES FOOTBALL: Talty relishing the pressure

CLARE manager Evan Talty insists that his side are embracing the pressure as they face Laois for a place in the TG4 All Ireland Intermediate Ladies Football Final, writes Ivan Smyth. With Clare just 60 minutes away from a place in Croke Park, Talty admits that although his team are focused on the task at hand, the prospect of lining out at GAA HQ is one that will enter the thought process of the players. “Some girls were there in 2016. I am a realist. It will one hundred percent enter the heads of both sets of players. If you lose the semi final you don’t get to experience playing in Croke Park. If you get to the final, whether you win, lose or draw you at least get that experience.” “I won’t be naïve to say it doesn’t enter the head of a player. These things are there. It’s a pressure game but pressure is a privilege. You can’t …

Talty wants Clare ladies to have their day

Clare manager Evan Talty wants his side to end their poor run of form in knockout football as they seek to stop a dangerous Longford outfit. With Clare having not won a knockout Championship game since 2016, the Clare manager is keenly aware that his side simply must find a way to win this Sunday in Birr (throw in 2pm), something which has proved problematic in recent years. Clare had failed to win an opening round Championship game since 2018 but rectified that statistic when defeating Down. They suffered a one point defeat to Louth, having already reached the knockout stages before a ball was kicked in Cusack Park two weeks ago. Talty now has his sights set on ending Clare’s poor run of form in knockout Championship football. “I’d be a fan of calling things as they are. We have experience. Our 20 year olds would have four years inter county behind them. They are young but mature. We …

Talty inspired by other codes as Clare ladies get going

Heading in to this Sunday’s TG4 All-Ireland Intermediate Ladies Football Championship, Clare manager Evan Talty admits his side are trying to replicate the success of the county’s camogie side. With Clare travelling to face Down this Sunday, Talty wants his charges to show the same grit and determination during their Championship campaign that the camogie side have displayed thus far. In recent weeks, John Carmody and Conor Dolan’s side have pushed last year’s All Ireland finalists Cork to extra time in the Munster final, eventually losing 0-24 to 1-18. Then they struck the final two points of the game to pick up a share of the spoils against Tipperary in the opening round of the Glen Dimplex Senior Camogie Championship last weekend. The Kilmurry-Ibrickane clubman wants his side to show the same mettle in this Championship campaign, starting with Sunday’s tricky away assignment. “I’d have a good relationship with Conor (Dolan) with us having dual players. The Camogie team have …

Talty back with Clare for 2022

THE Clare LGFA have announced the reappointment of Evan Talty as the County’s Intermediate Team Manager for the coming year. His reappointment came following a county board meeting this week, and he will be looking at potential panellists at the club championships, which commence this weekend. Chairman of Clare LGFA Sean Lenihan said; “We are delighted to have Evan in place for the year ahead. He and his management team brought a very professional approach to the setup. They prepared well in difficult circumstances and within a shortened season. We used the league to prepare and crucially, maintained our Division 2 status. We reached the knockout stages of the Championship and while we would have liked to progress further, we were just beaten by a strong Westmeath team who went on to win the All-Ireland Intermediate Final. There is definitely unfinished business in this Team and with Evan again as Manager, we will be going all out to be in …

LADIES FOOTBALL: Clare fightback falls short as Talty’s charges bow out of All-Ireland Championship

All-Ireland Intermediate Championship Quarter-Final Westmeath 3-11 Clare 2-11 Clare suffered an agonising three point defeat to Westmeath in the TG4 All-Ireland intermediate quarter final, reports Ivan Smyth. When Clare trailed by eight points near the conclusion of the opening half and by six points after 40 minutes, it appeared their hopes of progressing through to the semi final were thin but Evan Talty’s side produced a tremendous fightback as they fell just short. Clare scored 1-2 without reply as substitute Chloe Towey found the net as her side cut their deficit to a single point with five minutes remaining. After Anna Jones (free) and Niamh O’Dea traded scores, Clare tried desperately to find the score needed to level or win this back and forth contest. O’Dea and Chloe Moloney both saw shots drift wide of the uprights with Westmeath desperately clinging on. However, they showed great composure when late in the game they scored two frees. Clare had a chance …

Clare need to plug defensive holes in crunch match

Ivan Smyth speaks to Clare ladies football coach Evan Talty ahead of today’s crucial clash with Westmeath AFTER conceding 16 goals in their five games across the league and Championship so far this year, Clare manager Evan Talty is keenly aware of the need to address his side’s defensive issues. When Clare travel down to Tuam Stadium on Sunday afternoon to face Westmeath (throw in 2pm), they will need to produce their best defensive display to have any hopes of reaching the semi finals of the All-Ireland Intermediate Championship. After holding Wexford to 1-8 in an opening round league win, Clare have since shipped 4-13 to Kerry, 4-18 to Meath (both league games), 4-7 in an opening round Championship defeat to Leitrim and 3-6 in their final round group win against Fermanagh. Talty admits that the defensive displays have “not been good enough.” “It’s not been good enough from us defensively this year. You cannot win football games conceding three, …

LADIES FOOTBALL: Make-or-break for Clare’s battle with the Lakes

Clare v Westmeath at Tuam Stadium Galway, Sunday, at 2pm (Garryowen McMahon, Mayo) IT’S essentially a crossroads of sorts for the Clare ladies’ footballers this Saturday. Having failed to win a knock-out championship tie since contesting the All-Ireland Intermediate Final five years ago, the Banner crave a breakthrough against a major opponent just to even validate their developmental progress, writes Eoin Brennan. And they certainly don’t come much bigger than Westmeath who are not only favourites for the title, having paid their dues in the 2020 final against Meath in December but are also only down from senior level since 2019. Experienced forwards Leona Archibald, Fiona Claffey, Ciara Blundell and Lucy McCartan are still in situ from their last knock-out meeting with Clare in the 2016 National League Division 2 Semi-Final. Clare will be extremely wary of that attacking prowess, having conceded seven goals so far in just two group outings. Perfect timing then for the potential return of former …

Dragon investment to set seaweed company alight

By 2018, the Quilty-based seaweed weed company, established by the Talty family, is anticipating a €1 million turnover. The firm, Wild Irish Seaweed, was considerably boosted in this ambition on Sunday night, when Evan and Gerard Talty appeared on RTÉ’s Dragons’ Den where they were successful in pitching for a €50,000 investment from Alison Cowzer, one of the four dragons. “Everything changes now,” Evan told The Clare Champion on Monday. “While we’ve got this far on our own, we now have an investor on board so we have to be accountable to her and to prove that we can do what we said we’re going to do. We’ve also just been lined up for High Potential Start-Up status by Enterprise Ireland. They come in and give you €200,000 for a 10% share in your company,” he revealed. The company currently provides employment for 25 people, include 14 harvesters, who sell their produce to Wild Irish Seaweed. The reaction to their …
