Dangerous Driver sentenced to six years with two suspended for causing death

A SLOVAKIAN man whose driving was today described as “reckless” and showed “a propensity for risk taking”, has been sentenced to six years in prison, with the final two suspended, and has been banned from driving for 15 years. Rene Miko (21) of Place de Plouzane in Kilrush pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of Eugene McNamara on October 26, 2016 at Lifford, Gort Road, Ennis. At his sentence hearing today, Monday, at Ennis Circuit Criminal Court, Judge Gerald Keys said it was the court’s duty to protect the public from illegal driving of this kind. “A message must go out that anyone who drives in this manner, faces a serious sentence being imposed, and a significant ban on their licence. Man charged with dangerous driving causing death

A 20 year old man was before a special sitting of Ennis District Court this afternoon on a charge of dangerous driving causing the death of Eugene McNamara at Lifford, Gort Road, Ennis on October 26 of last year. He also faces a charge of unlawfully taking a vehicle at Lake Villa, Gort Road, Ennis on the same day. The defendant, Rene Miko, is a 20 year old man originally from Slovakia and now with an address at Place de Plouzane, Kilrush. Judge Gráinne O’Neill agreed to grant bail subject to several conditions. These included that the defendant reside at his address in Kilrush, sign on at the local Garda station daily and that an independent surety of €6,000 be provided, with €2,000 to be lodged. Alternatively, she said two sureties of €3,000 each could be provided, with a total of €2,000 still to be lodged. A separate bond was required from the defendant and he was also required not …

Ennisman struck by car dies from injuries

A 42 year-old pedestrian struck and seriously injured following a road traffic collision at Shiels roundabout in Ennis last Wednesday night has died from his injuries. The man has been named as Eugene McNamara from Ennis, a brother of Clare All-Ireland hurling medal winner, Stephen. He was actively involved with the Éire Óg GAA Club as a coach. The incident occurred just before 10pm near the roundabout when two cars collided with one going out of control and hitting Mr McNamara. He was rushed to University Hospital Limerick but passed away late last night. Two men in one of the cars, aged 25 and 19, fled the scene on foot after the collision. They were followed and apprehended by an off-duty garda. The men were treated for minor injuries and were detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Ennis Garda Station.
