Early goals give Clare the upperhand

Clare 4-17 Cork 0-18 A comfortable eleven point win over title holders Cork has earned Clare a place in the final of the Co-op Superstores Munster senior hurling league where they will play their neighbours and great rivals Limerick Three goals in the opening quarter sent Clare on their way to this merited win, their second in a week (they easily accounted for Kerry last week) and with Limerick also scoring their second win of the campaign both have sealed their places in the final. The teams were due to meet in the third round next week with the final scheduled for a week later but I understand that both are keen to go ahead with the final this coming weekend and its expected that this will be confirmed by the Munster council in the next day or two. While they weren’t in action this weekend, Clare senior footballers are through to the McGrath cup final where they will meet …

Clooney-Quin reach first senior final in 75 years

Clooney-Quin 0-16 Clonlara 0-14 Seventy five years after they last appeared in the Clare senior hurling championship final, Clooney-Quin are one step away from Clare’s top hurling honour. A contribution of 0-13 from Peter Duggan played a key role in their victory in this evening’s semi-final win over a fancied Clonlara side who had contested the finals of the past two years. In a game in which they were never behind, Clooney-Quin emerged as deserving winners but there was a period in the final quarter when their followers were nervous as Clonlara landed five points in a row to come to within a point of their opponents. Jimmy Corry gave them the lead inside the first minute and Peter Duggan struck for his first in the second minute before Ian Galvin opened Clonlara’s account. The sides were level four points in the first half at the end of which Clooney-Quin were two points clear, 0-9 to 0-7 having played with …

The winners held a five point lead, 1-8 to 1-3, at the end of the opening half. Feakle had drawn level by the three quarter stage and led by three points as the game entered ‘injury time’. The game was in the third minute of ‘added time’ when Duggan found the net to level the tie for the fourth time. They went on to dominate the extra period. Cratloe and Crusheen were also battling to remain in the race when they clashed at Cusack Park and here a contribution of …

Bobby Duggan makes impressive debut

By Seamus Hayes Clare 1-14 Limerick 0-11 MEMBERS of Clare’s All-Ireland winning senior hurling team from last September were given a stern warning at Sixmilebridge on Sunday that they face stiff competition for their places in the squad in 2014. For their first competitive game since the All-Ireland win, Davy Fitzgerald and his management team selected a team that included just one of the All-Ireland winning line up, Patrick O’Connor for this Waterford Crystal cup quarter final Making his senior inter county competitive debut, 18 year old Bobby Duggan put down a strong claim for a place in the squad with a powerful display which yielded 0-12, three of which came from play. Cathal O’Connell, a member of last year’s squad and Seadna Morey, also a member of last year’s team, laid solid claims for inclusion in the first fifteen in 2014 while Cillian Duggan, playing at full back, also staked a strong claim for a place in the 2014 …
