Members of one of the country’s most experienced Irish Coast Guard units are no longer allowed to respond to emergencies. This follows a decision on Monday by the Irish Coast Guard to take the Doolin unit in Co Clare ‘off the board.’ The move was precipitated by news earlier in the day that six volunteers at Doolin had resigned including the unit’s Officer in Charge (OiC). The Irish Coast Guard has now confirmed that the unit has been stood down but said that the team on Inis Oírr in the Aran Islands, which is managed by Doolin Coast Guard, will remain operational. Monday’s resignations left the unit with just 11 members however the Irish Coast Guard decided to stand the service down. Irish Coast Guard volunteers based at Doolin recovered the body of a woman, missing for several days, from the sea at the weekend. The body is believed to be that of a woman, from the Roscommon area, missing since her car was found abandoned near the Cliffs of Moher early last week. After recovering the body from the water, north of Doolin Pier, volunteers from the Doolin Coast Guard brought the body to the coast guard station from where it was removed to University Hospital Limerick for a post mortem examination.

It was a bad weekend for accidents in County Clare, in one case a precision parachute jump going astray and resulting in a fatality, and the other involving a serious car crash. The parachute jump incident occurred on Saturday at the Aill Na Searrach section of the Cliffs of Moher. Three men went to the sport to undertake a ‘base jump’, when people jump from a fixed structure or cliff wearing a parachute or wingsuit. The first man completed a safe jump but there was a tragic outcome for the second jumper whose parachute failed. The Irish Coast Guard was alerted, while an ambulance, rapid response advanced paramedic unit and gardaí responded to the scene . With good sea conditions, the Doolin Coast Guard craft was able to get close enough to the cliff base to allow three members make their way ashore. Gardaí have confirmed the search for a Belfast man missing in North Clare since earlier in the week has been called off following the discovery of a body in Galway. The search for the 22-year-old man from Belfast, who has been missing since Monday afternoon, was stood down following the discovery of a body near Salthill in Galway on Wednesday evening. Drone technology had been deployed during the week in the search for the 22 year-old who was reported missing after he failed to return to his tour bus which had stopped at Ballyreen, on the Wild Atlantic Way, between Fanore and Lisdoonvarna, at the designated time of departure. Volunteers from the Doolin coastguard responded when the alarm was raised around 2.30pm and they conducted a sea search. Land based teams were also engaged in combing the cliff top and shoreline while the Shannon based search and rescue helicopter was also involved. The search was co-ordinated by the gardaí backed …

THE tragic sea accident off Kilkee last September, which claimed the life of Doolin Irish Coast Guard volunteer Caitríona Lucas during a search and recovery operation, will be recalled at The Clare Association dinner in The Falls Hotel, Ennistymon on Friday, February 25. In recognition of her bravery and making the ultimate sacrifice, the association will be giving her a posthumous award by naming her its Clare Person of the Year for 2017. The 41-year-old Ballyvaughan woman, who lived in Liscannor, lost her life when she was one of three volunteers on board a rigid inflatable boat, which capsized in choppy conditions while taking part in the search for a missing man. The two other volunteers, one of whom was trapped in a cave for several hours, were rescued. The Clare Association usually holds its annual function at a Dublin venue but due to the special circumstances surrounding this year’s award, the decision was made to facilitate the North Clare …

A post mortem is due to be carried out today on the body of a woman taken from the sea near the Cliffs of Moher yesterday evening. Emergency services were alerted at around 5pm when walkers on the cliff trail spotted the body in the water near O’Brien’s Tower. The Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard launched their rescue boat and made their way to the scene and made a successful recovery at around 6.15pm. The woman’s remains were brought back to their boathouse in Doolin and later removed to the mortuary at University Hospital Limerick where a post mortem examination is expected to be carried out later today.

A post mortem is to be carried out on a body recovered in Kilkee on Saturday. The recovery was made by the Doolin unit of the Irish Coastguard. The body had been spotted in the water earlier on Saturday afternoon and was recovered at approximately 5.30pm. The body was handed over to Gardai and the HSE before being removed to University Hospital Limerick. The recovery follows a search operation for David McMahon from Lissycasey since he was reported missing on September 9. That operation has since been called off.

A tourist was removed to hospital with a serious leg injury following a fall on a walking trail at the Cliff of Moher yesterday evening. Doolin Goast Guard unit confirmed that volunteers were tasked to assist the HSE ambulance after a walker sustained a leg injury on the walking trail, south of the viewing platform. HSE Paramedics and Cliffs of Moher Rangers treated the casualty. Coast Guard members stretchered the casualty from the path onto a farm track and to the road where a waiting ambulance removed the woman to hospital.
