Pandemic puts brakes on Matt’s cycling bow

August was to have been a memorable month for young Matt Griffin. The 15 year-old Ennistymon teenager was to have made his national bow at a major cycling event in Austria but the Covid-19 pandemic has put the brakes on that happening. “It’s a pity. We were looking forward to the event and its very disappointing that the Austrian cycling event has been cancelled. I suppose health comes first in situations like that,” concedes his father, Matthew. The youngster’s metoric rise in cycling circles is driven by desire and a dedication which sees him make a 220 round trip to Kanturk in North Cork for training spins with the local youth cycling club. But distance is no barrier as his father Matthew fulfils the taxi driver role, ferrying him to and from the training sessions. Cyclist death was not due to road traffic collision

THE death of a cyclist whose body was found on the old Crusheen-Gort road (R458) this evening was not caused by a crash, Gardai believe. It is thought that the man, who was in his 50s, may have died due to a medical complication, and the cause of death may become apparent after a post mortem takes place on Tuesday. The man was part of a group who were on a long distance cycle in support of charity. They were due to conclude the day’s cycling in Gort and spend the night there. The man’s body was discovered a couple of kilometres to the Clare side of the county boundary with Galway. The road was closed for a period of time after the body was found but has since reopened.

Man arrested for questioning in fatal hit and run

GARDAI investigating a fatal traffic collision, which occurred at about 8.30pm on Wednesday night on the Gort Road in Loughrea have arrested a man in his 20s. The man has been detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at Loughrea Garda Station and can be detained for up to 24 hours. A cyclist, 68 year old John White, St Laurences Field in Loughrea, was fatally injured in the collision. He was taken to University College Hospital Galway where he was later pronounced dead. A post mortem was carried out yesterday afternoon by State Pathologist, Prof Marie Cassidy.
