Clare crematorium plans dead and buried

Plans for two crematoriums in County Clare have gone up in smoke after separate votes by public representatives this week. Clare County Council blocked plans for the development of a crematorium outside Ennis after voting against changing the zoning of the area at Kildysart Road, Ballaghfadda at a meeting on Friday morning. The site of the proposed development was in an area zoned for housing but the council’s planning department recommended permission be granted for the crematorium, subject to a vote by elected members about changing the land designation. In order for the permission to be issued, 21 councillors would have had to vote in favour of a material contravention of the Ennis and Environs Development Plan. In the end just 11 voted in favour of it with 15 against. There was significant opposition to the proposed chapel, crematorium and cemetery from funeral directors and undertakers across Clare. On Monday last councillors voted against disposing a site with planning permission …

No crematorium without breach of planning

INTEREST in hotting up about the proposed development of competing crematoriums in Clarecastle and Shannon, which will be the subject of two separate yet inter-linked proposals at next Monday’s Clare County Council meeting. The two largest parties, Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, and at least one independent, will have to unite to support a material contravention, which would facilitate the development of the Clarecastle crematorium. Anything less than 21 votes in favour of the proposed material contravention of the Ennis and Environs Development Plan would constitute a major setback to Fenloe Properties’ plans to construct a crematorium unit, memorial gardens, and cemetery at Kildysart Road, Ballaghfadda, Ennis. It is expected that Fianna Fáil will propose and support the Fenloe Properties development en bloc, which totals 12 votes. Fine Gael has yet to decide on its party position and is due to meet to consider these two proposals over the weekend or on Monday. A meeting of the new technical group …

Further information request on crematorium

THE developer behind plans for a crematorium on the outskirts of Ennis has been asked by the planning authority to supply details of mitigation measures to reduce potential harmful emissions from the proposed development if granted planning permission. Concern has also been raised about the effects of the proposed development on nearby Ballybeg Lake. Fenloe Property Development Limited have applied to the local authority for permission to construct a chapel, crematorium unit, furnace and remembrance gardens and cemetery at Ballaghfadda West on the Kildysart Road. And according to backers of the plan it will bring an economic boost to the local economy if given the go-ahead. Clare County Council have requested that the developers submit further information and revised proposals before making a decision. The planning authority have asked for a detailed specification of the proposed crematorium technology to be used at the facility as well as a description of the process outlining all waste products to be generated including …

Ennis crematorium plan under fire

A PROPOSAL for the development of a crematorium on the outskirts of Ennis has come under fire from the man who has taken over plans for the construction of a similar facility in Shannon. Jim Cranwell has acquired the interests of Illaunamanagh Ltd, which had originally been granted planning permission for a crematorium, chapel and remembrance garden in Shannon in March of 2009. Last year, the local authority granted Mr Cranwell an extension of planning permission for the development at Illaunamanagh, and  he intends to begin construction within the next 12 months. He is now urging Clare County Council to refuse an application for planning permission for another crematorium close to Ennis. The site is two kilometres south of Ennis and one kilometre to the west of Clarecastle and is currently zoned residential. Late last year,  Fenloe Property Development Limited applied to the local authority for permission to construct a chapel, crematorium unit, furnace and remembrance gardens and cemetery at Ballaghfadda …
