Rents €331 per month higher for average house than mortgages

A NEW survey has revealed a huge disparity between rental and mortgage payments on an average Clare house. People looking to rent a house are likely to spend €331 more on accommodation than someone who buys an equivalent property, new research shows. According to Moneysherpa.ie a house valued at just under €220,000 in Clare means monthly rent payments of €1,087 a month, compared to a mortgage of €756. More starkly, the difference between fully paying a 30-year mortgage and renting for that period comes to over €119,000.  Commenting on the analysis Mark Coan of moneysherpa.ie said the current lending rules need to be revisited. “This analysis raises some significant questions about the current Central Bank lending rules, which are in effect creating a chasm between those who can afford property and those that can not. “Those that can meet the current lending rules, will pay over €100,000 less to live in their home for 30 years and create an asset …

Fined €1,000 for causing Shannon flight diversion

A 28-year-old American man has been fined €1,000 after a plane was forced to divert to Shannon Airport. The diversion coast the airline €100,000. Barman Jody Bochner of Miami, Florida appeared at Limerick District Court, charged with threatening and abusive behaviour; being intoxicated and failing to obey directions from cabin crew. The Norwegian Air flight had been in the air for 40 minutes when cabin crew were alerted to smoke in one of the lavatories. An e-cigarette was allegedly taken from Bochner and he was returned to his seat. Around 20 minutes later Bochner became abusive and attempted to hit one of the male cabin crew members before he was restrained and handcuffed with the help of some passengers. Defence solicitor Stiofan Fitzpatrick said the incident was extremely unfortunate and there was no rhyme nor reason to explaining his client’s actions. Preliminary Clare storm damage bill hits €23.7m

CLARE County Council has estimated the total damage caused by Storm Christine in County Clare at €23,761,043 with Lahinch being the worst affected. At a specially convened meeting of Clare County Council on Friday, members were given an outline of a preliminary storm damage report, which estimated the total damage caused in Lahinch at €5,842,390. The next highest cost of repairs was in Kilbaha, estimated in the region of €3,423,950. Meanwhile, repairs at Cloughaninchy, Quilty are estimated at €2,581,250. Storm damage in New Quay amounted to approximately €1.854m, while the repair works necessary at Carrowdotia in Moneypoint are estimated at €1,115,400. Councillors viewed CCTV footage of the storm captured at Lahinch promenade. A contingency fund of €2,160,095 was also included in the preliminary report, and costs of non-coastal repairs were estimated in the region of €190,000.  Meanwhile, water services issues relating to the storm came to approximately €20,000.
