Roadbridge receivership end of Coonagh-Knockalisheen Road?

SUBCONTRACTORS and construction suppliers throughout Clare are owed substantial sums of money following the announcement construction giant Roadbridge is going into receivership, leaving the future of its 630 workforce and a further 1,000 indirect positions in jeopardy. The Limerick-headquartered civil engineering and construction firm, which traded for over half a century, sent shock waves throughout the Mid-West when it requested Bank of Ireland on Friday to appoint Grant Thornton as receivers as result of insurmountable financial challenges. This decision also places a major question mark over when projects like the €58 million Coonagh to Knockalisheen Road will be fully completed following the company’s serious financial difficulties. Residents in South-East Clare are becoming increasingly concerned this unexpected setback will result in years of a delay or may even scupper the project entirely for the foreseeable future. It is understood half of the first phase of this major piece of road infrastructure is properly finished. Concerns had been raised when the company, …

No clarity around future of construction firm

THERE is little clarity about the future of Kilmihil construction company Keating this week. While contact was made on Tuesday, the company had not come back with a comment at the time of going to press. Keating were working on the new library in Ennis, adjacent to Glór, but activity had all but ceased there on Wednesday. The few remaining workers at the site were reluctant to speak about the situation. On Tuesday Clare County Council were asked if Keating were still working on the project, or if it had stopped. However, they declined to answer directly, saying the query should go to the company. The most recent set of accounts for L&M Keating cover 2018 and were filed late last year. They show that Louis and Cathy Keating had transferred a combined total of 387,502 shares to All Waves Holdings Limited on January 11, 2018. Louis Keating resigned as a director on July 1, 2019. The accounts showed the …

Clare’s construction sector on the rise, slowly but surely

WITH predictions that the Irish construction industry will increase in size by a massive 20% in 2019, the once moribund sector has shown signs of life around the Banner, although there is some frustration that the progress isn’t as quick in Clare as around the major urban centres. Enda Galvin of Galvin Construction said he does expect the industry to improve significantly in the coming months. “I’d imagine so, it kind of has already for ourselves but you’d hope it would for everyone.” A tiny number of housing estates have been finished in the county over the last 10 years but his company is currently working on a new one. “We launched in Crusheen before Christmas and we had fairly good sales, off plans. About half of our first phase is gone off the plans. We’re hoping that by the middle or end of February we’ll have the first phase sold out, so it’s not bad now.” There are 12 …

Raheen hospital moves towards HIQA standards

THE Health Service Executive is to lodge a planning application in the coming weeks for the construction of an extension to Raheen Community Hospital to include six single rooms, one double room with en-suites and a new patient sitting area. The HSE publicised its intention to seek planning permission on Thursday and, commenting on the proposed development, Labour TD, Michael McNamara has said it is “a crucial first step in bringing the community hospital up to HIQA standards”. He said the extension, if granted, will ensure greater comfort and care for the patients in this highly-regarded facility. “The planning application has been expected for a long time but I believe that recent modifications to the plans, based on work carried out at Ennistymon and Kilrush community hospitals, will make for a better outcome at Raheen. “It is proposed to construct a new single-storey extension to include six single and one double bedrooms, all with en-suite facilities. The proposal to include …

New extension at St Aidan’s

THE first permanent extension since the initial construction of St Aidan’s School in Shannon has been opened for some weeks and was recently blessed by the Bishop of Killaloe Kieran O’Reilly. The new extension to the school consists of a main stream classroom, two resource rooms, staff toilets and an extended car park. Speaking this week, school principal Patrice Hayes said; “We had it blessed following the confirmation ceremony, it was a good opportunity for the Bishop who was confirming the children to bless it on the same day. The children actually moved into it in April. We only applied for it in September 2012 and it was ongoing all of last year.” She said that putting the extension in place had been quite a big project; “It’s one 80 metres squared classroom, a resource room, staff toilets and we also redesigned our existing car park. There was a lot of work.” The school is going to have a …
