Putting seniors on the alert

Pobal is calling on community groups in County Clare to avail of supports for older persons under the Seniors Alert Scheme (SAS). Managed by Pobal on behalf of the Department of Rural and Community Development, the Seniors Alert Scheme, provides funding for personal monitored alarms for vulnerable older people. While the scheme has expanded, with 608 older people in County Clare availing of personal monitored alarms, there is still scope for the provision of further alarms. A survey of those who availed of the scheme between September 2015 and December 2016 found 68% were living alone, 67% were female, while 51% of all participants were over the age of 80. 52% cited an ‘existing health condition’ as one of the reasons for applying to the scheme, while ‘fear of crime’ (13%) and ‘peace of mind’ (27%) were other contributory factors. New campaign to combat burglary

Crimestoppers, together with the Garda Síochána and PhoneWatch, has launched a new campaign to combat the problem of burglary. The campaign is calling on members of the public to be vigilant for suspicious activity and to make themselves aware of the straightforward measures they can take to minimize the risk of burglary. The most recent figures from the Central Statistics Office say that from mid-2014 to mid-2015 there were 28,830 burglaries reported in Ireland. This was an increase of 2,241 (8.4%) from the 26,589 burglaries reported from mid-2013 to mid-2014. Crimestoppers is advising householders that there are a number of measures that they can follow to keep their home safe and protect themselves against burglars: * Secure all windows and doors. * Light up you home and use timer switches when out. * Sign up to your local Community Alert and Neighbourhood Watch schemes. * Consider installing a monitored alarm and installing outside lights. Garda Alert: suspicious car

Residents in the Quin area have received a Community Alert warning about a suspicious car. “A silver Ford Focus,  with a  04 L   registration, has been spotted acting suspiciously through Clare,” a resident told The Clare Champion. Members of the public are asked to report any sightings to the nearest garda station.

On the Alert in Quin

THE people of Quin have decided to set up a Community Alert for the village and its surrounds, following a public meeting held this week. Organised by Councillor Clare Colleran Molloy, the information meeting discussed crime in the area, crime prevention and issues around anti-social behaviour. A large gathering attended Quin Community Centre on Monday night, where presentations were given by Crime Prevention Officer Sergeant Joe Downey, Peter Butler of Task Community Care, deputising for Bernard Kearney of Muintir na Tíre and Quin liaison garda, Caitríona Mangan. Mr Butler spoke about the benefits of personal alarms for older people in the community, while Sergeant Downey gave a presentation on crime prevention measures that homeowners can take to secure their properties. Questions were taken from the floor and the primary issue raised was the desire to re-open Quin garda station. If this is not possible, the community want an increased garda presence.
