With just three of the players that started in the previous week’s senior championship final, in their starting line up, Clonlara still managed a comfortable 2-21 to 0-14 victory over Clarecastle in the quarter final of the Clare Champion cup (senior hurling league) at Sixmilebridge this Saturday night. Despite trailing by six points (0-3 to 0-9) after twenty minutes and by four at half time when the score was 0-6 to 0-10, the South Clare club turned this tie around in the second half which they dominated. Clonlara had drawn level nine minutes into the new half and after they exchanged points in the next two minutes, Clonlara took over and hit 2-8 without reply, the goals coming from Pat O’Hare and Ken Haskett. Clonlara 1-11 Ballyea 1-11 Clare GAA’s finances received a massive boost for the second time in a week as Clonlara and Ballyea ended on level terms in the senior hurling championship final played before an attendance fo 5.046 at Cusack Park this Sunday afternoon. While it won’t be remembered as one of the greatest hurling finals, it did provide a tremendous finish which produced a couple of outstanding points. Overall a share of the spoils was a fair outcome on a day when the sides were level on six occasions Inter county players Tony Kelly and Cathal O’Connell certainly gave the patrons value for money with some outstanding scores under huge pressure. A championship that has produced its share of talking points without setting the world alight with regard to the standard of play draws to a close on Sunday. The expectation is, however, that Clonlara and Ballyea will give patrons an afternoon to remember. In opposition in the senior hurling decider are some of the players who have shone in an eight-year period where county teams have won Munster and All-Ireland honours at minor, U-21 and senior levels. Supporters have marvelled at the performances of the likes of Tony Kelly, Colm Galvin, Darach Honan and John Conlon, while the O’Donovan brothers will forever be remembered when Cormac was the scorer of a last-minute point that won the 2009 All-Ireland U-21 title and when Domhnall earned a replay in the 2013 senior final. Clonlara 1-18 Cratloe 1-16 An all round better balanced Clonlara booked a place in the Clare senior hurling final for the second year in a row when they accounted for their South Clare neighbours Cratloe at Cusack Park this Sunday afternoon. Whether or not the end round would have been different had Cratloe star Conor McGrath not suffered a shoulder injury which ended his involvement in the match with over ten minutes remaining is a matter of speculation. With 1-7 to his credit at the time, he was a big threat to Clonlara but with just over ten minutes remaining he was forced out of the tie and was clearly in pain as he received attention on the sideline. The sides were level three times in the opening eleven minutes before the winners opened a three point gap by the end of the first quarter and they held this lead to the break when the score was o-12 to 0-9. …

An eleven point haul from Tony Kelly helped steer Ballyea into the Clare senior hurling championship semi-final when they recorded a 1-18 to 0-13 win over a fancied Crusheen at Cusack Park this Saturday evening. Crusheen started  as if they were going to score a comfortable win, racing into a 0-7 to 0-1 lead after fourteen minutes. From here on it was a different story, however, as Ballyea took over and when the half time whistle sounded they were five points clear, 1-9 to 0-7, the goal coming from Gary Brennan on the stroke of half time. They continued to hold the upperhand in the second half and by the three quarter stage they had stretched their lead to eight points, 1-15 to 0-10. In addition to Kelly, Gearoid O’Connell, Paul Flanagan, Jack Browne, Brian Carigg, Cathal Doohan and Gary Brennan were prominent. There were no major shocks as round 2 of the Clare senior hurling championship was completed this Sunday afternoon. Weather conditions were anything but pleasant as the remaining three games in the round were played at Sixmilebridge, Broadford and Tulla. Clonlara secured their passage to the quarter finals with a hard earned 2-13 to 1-11 win over Clooney-Quin at O’Garney Park. They got off to a superb start with a goal from Darach Honan in the second minute and the inter county man quickly followed with a point. By the end of the first quarter Clooney-Quin were in front helped by a Mike Daffy goal. A superb goal from Nicky O’Connell put the winners back in front and when the half time whistle sounded they were 2-2 to 1-4 ahead. THE Clare Senior Hurling Championship will get underway with the meeting of Tulla and Clarecastle on this Friday evening, with all 16 teams in action over the weekend. An opening round victory will mean the threat of relegation from the top grade is eliminated. A new format was introduced last year, which will see one of the eight first-round losers relegated to the intermediate grade for next season. Following the first round, the eight winners will be drawn against each other, while the eight losers will also be drawn to face each other with the four losers going on to battle it out in the relegation play-off. Two of last year’s semi-finalists will find themselves in the losers round, as Sixmilebridge (holders) take on Crusheen and Clonlara (beaten finalists) face Kilmaley this weekend. THE new Government has been urged to put in place an accessible compensation package to enable residents in South-East Clare restore their flood-hit properties. A local Sinn Féin activist has also called on the new administration to ensure that insurance companies will not be allowed to abdicate their responsibilities by compensating householders who have the necessary policy in place and should continue to give them cover in the future. In a wide-ranging address to the Sinn Féin Ard Fheis on Saturday, Margaret O’Connor claimed several insurance companies are now refusing to cover people in entire regions because they are what has been described as “designated flood zones”, even though they have never been flooded or are never likely to be flooded.
