Clean Ireland Recycling, a family-run waste management business based in Cree, has cleaned up on the awards front, winning the Kerbside Collection Service of the Year Award at the 2014 Repak Recycling Awards. Run by brothers, John and Michael O’Donoghue, Clean Ireland has a large kerbside customer base of 30,000 households and their waste management service covers Clare, Limerick, Kilkenny and South Tipperary. They have a six-bin collection system, which consists of residual bins, mixed dry recyclables, food waste, glass, grass and clothes. They accept an extended range of materials in the mixed dry recyclables bin, once they are clean and dry. The introduction of the multiple-compartment collection vehicles, which are the first of their kind in Europe, has meant that Clean Ireland only has to do fortnightly collections. This, in turn, minimises disruption to customers and lowers the carbon footprint, as well as collection costs. Providing a new lease of life to a Dublin St John of God Sister has helped a top Parteen hearing aid specialist scoop the most coveted award in his field for the second successive year. Peter Ferguson, a long-time resident of Parteen, fought off stiff competition to secure the Irish Audiologist of the Year crown for the second year running. Mr Ferguson was nominated by his patient, Anne Casey, age 64, who described how he helped her participate fully in life, after an infection caused severe hearing loss. Anne’s hearing began to deteriorate when she was just 27, having contracted Rubella, which caused damage to the nerve endings in her ear. At the time, Anne had just embarked on a teaching career in Dublin and was left devastated when her hearing aid audiologist informed her that the infection had caused such severe hearing loss that hearing aids would be of no help. Tubber National School received their fourth Green Flag last week, at a ceremony in the Radisson Hotel in Galway. The theme of the flag was travel. The children were very conscious that for every 1km journey in a car, 13 balloons of CO2 are released into the atmosphere. To reduce the amount of CO2, the children decided to come to school in a more eco-friendly way. This included travelling by bicycle, by walking and by park and stride. Some children also came to school by carpooling with other families. With help from Roisin Ni Ghairbhith, An Taisce Green Schools officer for County Clare, the children used incentives such as a Golden Boot award, to encourage all the children in the school to take part. The school also received their 10th Discover Primary Science and Maths award this week. They are only one school of 16 in the country that have received 10 such awards. RECOGNITION for the volunteers in the GAA is how Lissycasey’s Anne Hayes describes her selection as a winner of a GAA presidential award, which will be presented  in Croke Park on this Friday evening. The Lissycasey club secretary who is the current Irish officer with Clare GAA, will be presented with her award by association president Liam O’Neill at a function which will be shown live on TG4 at 7.30pm. “There are many people involved in the GAA who would be more worthy of this award and I will accept it on behalf of all of them, the voluntary workers in the clubs. These are the real GAA people. THE  lifesaving exploits of a Great Dane will be fittingly honoured with a national award this weekend. Charlie’s ability to detect when a three year-old Killaloe child is going to have a seizure, will be officially recognised by the Irish Great Dane (IGD) club at a national ceremony in Dublin. The club wanted to honour Charlie following the phenomenal response to Clare Champion story highlighting the unique bond between the dog and Brianna Lynch, which enabled him to detect her frequent seizures, up to 20 minutes before the start of each episode. The once-off award, which has never been presented to any other dog previously, will be presented to Arabella Scanlan and Charlie as the Great Dane Open Show in the National Show Centre, Dublin this Saturday.   Clare Champion staff photographer, John Kelly, tonight added to his considerable collection of awards when he was awarded 2nd prize in the Daily Life and People Category of the AIB PPAI Awards. This follows his first prize win in the News category last year. In total, John has garnered 12 PPAI awards in his 20 years entering the competition. John’s monochrome image, Room with a View, depicts the living conditions of Caroline Sherlock, who shares a caravan with her seven children.

THE Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience website has been shortlisted for another major digital award just weeks after finishing as a runner-up in the eircom Golden Spider Awards. www.cliffsofmoher.ie has been shortlisted for the Samsung Digital Media Awards ‘Best in Travel & Tourism’ category, the winner of which will be announced on February 21. The Cliffs of Moher website was launched in July 2013 having undergone a revamp that introduced a number of new features, including of an interactive guide to the visitor attraction and 360 degree panoramic views of the Cliffs and Visitor Centre. “The website is designed to have a high visual appeal with full screen background images and exciting video and 360 degree image content bringing the site alive. CLARE County Council is a finalist in the 10th annual Engineers Ireland Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Employer of the Year Awards for 2013-2014. Clare County Council, which has a long and successful record of CPD, has been shortlisted for its achievements in using in-house expertise, local knowledge and innovation to develop the Clare County Flood Forecasting System (CCFFS). The system has proven highly successful and is being replicated by a number of organisations throughout the country. Dublin City Council, Dromone Engineering Limited, global healthcare company Abbott Ireland and PM Group are among other leading organisations shortlisted for the awards.
