Clare gardai in operation targeting organised criminality

Gardai from the Clare Garda Division are involved in a major search operation across counties Limerick, Clare and Tipperary targeting organised criminality in Limerick City and its environs. Currently nine people are in custody in relation to this operation. As part of Operation Coronation, in excess of 170 members of gardaí from Limerick, Clare and Tipperary Divisions supported by the Criminal Assets Bureau, Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau, the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the Emergency Response Unit, the Armed Response Unit and Regional Dog Unit commenced a search operation at over 60 premises this morning at 6am. The operation is also supported by three teams of  Irish Army Search Engineers, the Army EOD team and the Army Helicopter. Operation Coronation is targeting organised extended criminality, drug trafficking and the financial returns achieved from this type of activity through money laundering. Five arrested following Ennis burglary

Gardaí have arrested five men in their late teens and early 20s, in relation to a burglary at a phone shop on O’Connell Street, Ennis in the early hours of this morning (Monday). Shortly before 2.30am, Gardaí in Ennis received a report of a burglary that had just occurred in which a grey car was seen leaving the area. Gardaí located the suspect car and carried out a managed pursuit. The car was abandoned on Ballyalla Grove and the occupants fled in different directions. One man was arrested by Gardaí and is currently detained at Ennis Garda Station. A search of the car was carried out and Gardaí recovered a large quantity of mobile phones that had been stolen. Gardaí put a cordon in place in the surrounding areas and a car was stopped on the Gort Road at around 5.30am. Third arrest in Clare as part of drugs and firearms investigation

A third arrest has been made as part of an ongoing operation targeting the sale and supply of illegal drugs and the possession of firearms in  Clare. A female in her 20s is being detained at Ennis Garda station under section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007. Two males in their 30s arrested on Tuesday  remain in custody. As part of an on-going operation targeting the sale and supply of illegal drugs and the possession of firearms in Clare, Gardaí arrested two men in their 30s, on Tuesday of this week. Detective and uniform Gardaí from the Clare division carried out searches at a number of properties in the Ennis area. Both men are currently detained at Ennis and Shannon Garda Stations under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007. Two men arrested by gardai

TWO men in their 30s have been arrested by gardai this morning as part of an on-going operation targeting the sale and supply of illegal drugs and the possession of firearms in County Clare. As part of the operation, detective and uniform Gardaí from the Clare division carried out searches at a number of properties in the Ennis area. Both men are currently detained at Ennis and Shannon Garda Stations under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007. This operation relates to recent drugs and firearms incidents in Clare and is also related to the seizure of a sub-machine gun, ammunition and approximately €125,000 of suspected cocaine and cannabis herb that were seized in the county in August of last year.

Third man arrested in Kilkee fatal stabbing

A third man has been taken into custody by gardaí investigating the fatal stabbing of 25 year-old Karl Haugh from Kilkee. Mr Haugh, a father of one, sustained fatal stab wounds during an altercation at Marion Estate at approximately 1.15am on Sunday morning. He was removed to University Hospital Limerick where he was pronounced dead. Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis has since carried out a post-mortem examination. The man, in is 20s, was arrested in the West Clare area and is detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at Ennis Garda Station. This brings to three the number of people in custody as part of the investigation. Two others, also in their 20’s, are detained at Kilrush Garda Station. Members of the Clare Divisional Crime Scene Investigation Unit carried out a technical examination of the scene while gardaí have also appointed a Garda Liaison Officer to the Mr Haugh’s family. Christmas drink driving arrests down 66%

THERE was a drastic drop in the number of drink-driving arrests in Clare over the Christmas period. Arrests for suspected drink-driving were down by over 66%, down from 17 in 2014 to five in 2015, according to figures from Clare Garda Traffic Corps. There were also falls in the number of non-serious injury traffic incidents in the 12-day period, down from six in 2014 to two in 2015. The number of material damage only traffic incidents also decreased from 34 over the Christmas period of 2014 to 23 in the same period last year. There were no fatal traffic incidents in the holiday period for 2015 and 2014, as well as no serious injury incidents recorded. Sergeant Darragh Molloy of Ennis Garda Traffic Corps stated, “The gardaí are very pleased with the figures for the recent Christmas period, showing a downward trend in road traffic accidents and drink-driving arrests. 70 ‘Drunk Driving’ Arrests in Clare this Year

Eleven people were arrested on suspicion of drunk-driving in County Clare over the June Bank Holiday weekend, bringing the total number of people to have been arrested on suspicion of drunk-driving in Clare since January to 70 people. Speaking about the level of drunk-driving in the county, Clare’s Chief Superintendent, John Kerin said the 11 arrests over the June Bank Holiday weekend represent an increase of 17%, or 10 arrests, for the crime on last year. “One might say 10 isn’t an awful lot but there are still 70 people now arrested in Clare in the first five months for drunken driving. It was 60 this time last year and 11 people driving over the legal limit in a week in a county like Clare is significant and it’s worrying,” he said. He added that what made the figure all the more stark was that some of those people detected were caught at various times of the day. “One person …

Eleven arrested in Kilrush money lending investigation

As part of an ongoing investigation into unlawful money lending, gardai in Clare have arrested 11 people following searches in the Kilrush on Tuesday morning. The searches, which commenced at 7am, were carried out at a number of premises in the area, including private and business premises and involved local gardaí assisted by Criminal Assets Bureau, Regional Support Unit, Special Dectective Units from Galway, the National Criminal Intelligence Unit as well as offcials from Revenue, Social Welfare and Clare County Council. The arrests include five males aged between 18 and 55  years, and six females aged between 20 and 49 years. All those arrested are detained at stations in Clare, Limerick and Galway under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. The investigation, which has been ongoing for several months, centres around complaints received from various individuals and is focused on persons suspected to be engaged in unlicensed money lending.
