Flight diverts to Shannon after bomb scare

A UNITED Airlines flight from Rome to Chicago has diverted to Shannon this afternoon due to a bomb scare. It is understood that an anti American slogan was written on a mirror in a bathroom of the aircraft. Furthermore, there was a mention of a bomb being on board. The airport has remained open. At the time of writing the passengers have left the aircraft and many of them are on the tarmac outside the plane. The plane has been parked some distance away from the terminal building.

Wallace and Daly appear at Ennis District Court

WEAPONS have been routinely carried through Shannon by the US military, it was claimed at Ennis District Court on Tuesday, during a hearing into a case against TDs Mick Wallace and Clare Daly. During evidence, Irish Times security analyst, Tom Clonan played a recording taken from a plane at Shannon, which advised soldiers to leave their weapons on board. Also, a former Irish army officer warned that missiles that were brought through the airport on one occasion could have resulted in it being blown up, along with much of the adjacent Shannon Industrial Estate. Mr Wallace, 59, of Clontarf Road, Dublin 3, and Ms Daly, 46, of Elmwood Drive, Swords, Dublin, are accused of climbing a perimeter fence at Shannon Airport and entering a part of the airport to which they were not permitted on July 22 of last year, contrary to the Airport Bylaws of 1994. ASL to establish new Hercules base at Shannon Airport

ASL Aviation Group has signed a partnership with Shannon Airport which will see Shannon become a new base for ASL’s Hercules aircraft operations. ASL  plans to initially base two L-100 aircraft in Shannon, to be used on missions ranging from oil-spill response to humanitarian aid.  The Hercules’ crews and support staff will be based in Shannon where Air Contractors, an ASL Group company, already has its own maintenance base. The decision follows the signing of a Letter of Intent by ASL Aviation Groupwith aircraft manufacturer Lockheed Martin this week to order up to 10 LM-100J commercialHercules freighter aircraft. Emergency landing at Shannon

A US military transport plane made an emergency landing at Shannon Airport on Thursday evening following a suspected fuel leak over the Atlantic. The United States Navy C130H Hercules aircraft was about 300 kilometres west of Ireland when the crew declared an emergency and requested permission to route back to Shannon. The airport’s emergency plan was put into action with the local authority fire brigade from Shannon Town and Ennis along with the HSE ambulance service were alerted. The flight touched down safely at 4.53pm and parked up on a remote taxiway. The crew confirmed after landing that the fuel leak had stopped.
