Shannon Airport will remain open throughout Monday, despite the potential impact of Hurricane Ophelia. A Shannon Airport spokeswoman stressed the safety of passengers and staff is its first priority. The spokesperson asked passengers to contact their airline with regard to updates on schedule changes for Monday. However, at this point the airport is aware of the following flight cancellations: Aer Lingus Regional EI3675/3672 from and to Edinburgh and EI 3639/3638 from and to Birmingham, and London/Heathrow EI381 and EI384 with Aer Lingus. THE first all-female duo cyclists to compete in the ultra-endurance Race Around Ireland are expected to arrive in Clare on Wednesday next. Lisa Jacob, former Irish international hockey player with 139 caps, and Nikki Dorey, a pilot with Aer Lingus and competitive triathlete, are competing in the gruelling ultra-distance 2,150km non-stop race. The pair will alternate cycling three hours on and three hours off for 132 hours, or five and a half days straight, starting this Sunday. They are expected to arrive in Clare on Wednesday, travelling through Doolin, Lahinch, Spanish Point, Ennis and Sixmilebridge. Both girls are strongly passionate about mental health, so they are also fundraising €100,000 for one of Ireland’s leading mental health charities, Suicide or Survive. Everything from microchips inserted at birth to predict health problems to self-drive cars with workstations were imagined for a world 50 years from now as 700 students competed at the second Young Innovators competition at Shannon Airport. The students representing schools nationwide were set the tasks of imagining the world 50 years from now and coming up with new business ideas for then across six categories – how we Live, Work, Play, Shop, Learn and Travel. Top honours were claimed by St. Patrick’s Comprehensive, Shannon. The Irish Technology Leaders Group (ITLG) event, in association with LIT, saw the students mentored by representatives from some of the world’s leading companies including Dell, Intel, Analog, Johnson and Johnson, Cook Medical, Zagg and Logitech ahead of submitting their project. Some 700 students will touch down in Shannon Airport on Wednesday morning to compete for the The Irish Technology Leaders Group (ITLG) Young Innovators title. The event starts at 10am in the terminal building and will see the students from 15 counties imagine the world 50 years from now in a competition to become Ireland’s ‘Young Innovators’ for 2016. Teams will be tasked with exploring how society will live, work, play, shop, learn and travel half a century away. The winning team will be announced at 4pm following a pitch by a shortlist of finalists and will walk away with not alone the ‘Young Innovators’ title but a dream trip to Silicon Valley, California courtesy of Aer Lingus. Students will have the opportunity over the course of the day to meet with and hear from experts from these companies as well as experts in future technologies from the third level sector. Tourism Ireland in Britain is partnering with Aer Lingus this month, to promote flights to Shannon Airport. Advertisements are highlighting “the untamed coast of Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way” and good value fares to Shannon for the autumn and winter months. The ads – which feature a wonderful image of the Cliffs of Moher – are running in major titles including The Independent, The Times, the Guardian, Observer, Metro and London Evening Standard. Working closely with airlines and airports to build demand for flights is a key priority for Tourism Ireland. Vanessa Markey, Tourism Ireland’s head of Great Britain, said: “We are delighted to co-operate with Aer Lingus to drive demand for its service from London Heathrow to Shannon, to help grow tourist numbers to Co Clare and the West of Ireland. Aer Lingus has given Shannon Airport a boost with 55,000 additional seats on services for summer 2016. The increases are to Heathrow (35,000 seats), Faro (10,000 seats) and Malaga (10,000 seats). This is in addition to their 20% increase in capacity announced earlier this year for both Heathrow and Lanzarote, which kicks in for the 2015 winter season and will see 25,000 extra seats on London and 1,300 seats to Lanzarote. Aer Lingus’ for summer 2016 plan spell good news for people seeking a summer sun holiday, as the airline responds to market demand by increasing services to Faro from three to four flights weekly and Malaga from two to three flights weekly. DESPITE sometimes frosty relations, Aer Lingus has long provided Shannon with links to some of the world’s most important airports, including JFK and Heathrow and the implications of its takeover by International Airlines Group (IAG), which was confirmed on Tuesday evening, are going to be watched closely. There are differing views; some worry that being part of the group will lead to the airline pulling back from Shannon services in the long term, while others feel it can provide new opportunities for the Clare airport. IAG issued a statement on Tuesday evening which said, “IAG has received confirmation of the valid acceptance of its offer for Aer Lingus in respect of all the Aer Lingus shares held by the Ryanair Group.
