FOUNDER and voluntary CEO of Chernobyl Children International (CCI) Adi Roche paid a special visit to the youngsters of Teach Abhaile pre-school and naíonra this week, describing the children as “our hope for the future”. The campaigner who has spoken out on issues relating to the environment, peace and social justice talked to the children at the Ennis school about the ways they can protect our world. The school on Kevin Barry Avenue was festooned in orange, the colour of Chernobyl Children International with cards and decorations made by the children given pride of place. THE University of Limerick has conferred honorary doctorates on six exceptional people from the worlds of humanitarianism, business, the arts and the public sector. Josephine Feehily, chairperson of the Police Authority, first female chairperson of the Revenue Commissioners, chair of the World Customs Organisation and chair of the OECD Forum for Tax Administration was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Economic Science. Michael Flatley, dancer, choreographer, and musician, internationally known for Irish dance shows Riverdance, Warlords, Lord of the Dance, Feet of Flames, and Celtic Tiger was conferred with the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters. Ali Hewson, activist and humanitarian and recipient of the Princess Grace Humanitarian Award, was conferred with the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters. The first of the annual airlift of children for the  Chernobyl Children International (CCI) touched down in Shannon Airport  on Sunday evening. The children, who come from impoverished backgrounds, institutions and foster homes in the heart of the contaminated Chernl zone will be hosted by Irish families throughout 17 counties in Ireland as part of CCI’s Summer Rest & Recuperation Programme. Despite these challenging times, Irish volunteer host families continue to raise funds locally throughout Ireland to support the children and ensure they benefit from a cleaner environment. THE increasingly volatile situation in strife-torn Ukraine has raised fresh fears over a $2 billion internationally funded construction project to make the still highly unstable Chernobyl nuclear power plant safe for the next 100 years, according to a leading anti-nuclear campaigner. The world’s worst nuclear accident occurred at Chernobyl – a two hour, 120 kilometre drive – north of the Ukrainian capital Kiev on April 26, 1986. The explosion affected the lives of more than seven million people. Twenty-eight years later, efforts are still continuing to try to prevent the spread of its deadly radiation.
