St Flannan’s footballers take on St Brendan’s

With just one competitive outing under their belts this season, St Flannan’s face into a Corn U í Mhuirí, Munster colleges senior A football championship quarter-final clash against St Brendan’s from Killarney next Wednesday at 2.30pm.

A venue for this game will be finalised at the weekend and amongst those being considered is Newcastle West.
With just 11 teams taking part in the competition this season, St Flannan’s found themselves in group four, in which the only other team was Chorca Dhuibhne (Dingle Community School).
However, before a ball was kicked, both teams knew
that they were through to the quarter-finals and all that
was at stake when they met back last October was their
positioning.
The Kerry side emerged as comfortable winners on a score of 1-14 to 0-8 to secure top spot.
While St Brendan’s will go into Wednesday’s quarter-final
as favourites, St Flannan’s will be boosted by the
knowledge that teams from the Ennis school have quite a
good record against their Killarney counterparts in recent times.
While St Brendan’s topped their group, they struggled to overcome second placed St Colman’s.
The Ennis side has quite a number of dual players in
their squad and these include Gearóid O’Connell, Tony
Kelly, Aaron Considine, Niall Arthur, Michael O’Neill and
Eamonn Malone from their Harty Cup squad.
The recent inclement weather resulted in St Flannan’s mentors Dara Kelly and John Connole having to cancel a number of challenge games but St Brendan’s were probably in the same position.
While the odds would appear to be stacked in favour of
St Brendan’s, who last won the title back in 2008, the
Clare outfit will approach Wednesday’s game in a
determined mood to move a step closer to a title they last captured in 1995.
