Official opening of Feakle playground

The children of Feakle made a dash from national school last Friday as they knew this was the day their new playground would be open.

According to chairman of Feakle Community Council, Michael Collins, the day “went off like a dream”.
The grand opening was preceded by an art competition in the national school, where the Mayor of Clare, Christy Curtin, chose eight top pictures drawn by the children of the parish.
The pupils had been working on artwork featuring their new playground and how they expected it to look, long before the facility was completed.
The attendance of the mayor on the day was extra special, as many of the pupils had never seen the Clare chain of office.
Councillor Christy Curtin presented a prize to one pupil’s drawing from each class and each class received a box of sweets.
Mr Collins said, “The pictures were centred on the playground. The children had a look at the playground before it was completed and drew their pictures on things that were nice about it.
It was their own vision of it before it was finished. There were some beautiful pictures.”
The playground has a number of key features including a climbing unit, cable way, a bird’s nest swing, ordinary swings, a cup and saucer, roundabout and a seesaw.
“There was a brilliant reaction, they all came up from the school. They were never in there before then, so there was fierce excitement. The children were on it until dark. The community are delighted and think of it as a great asset to the parish.
“I’d like to express my gratitude to those who gave of their time and machinery voluntarily. The community spirit was brilliant.
“The people of the parish were great to come out and give their time and only for that we wouldn’t have achieved it. It was a great occasion and I’d like to acknowledge the attendance of the mayor, members of the council and county manager, who helped make this a big occasion,” Mr Collins concluded.
