O’Callaghan’s Mills to get FÁS workers

O’Callaghan’s Mills Community Council has been successful in securing two workers under the FÁS scheme for a 12-month period and it is hoped the appointment will help with the general upkeep and maintenance of the village.

The Mills had one person employed on a FÁS scheme a number of years ago. However, when new guidelines were introduced stipulating this place became part of the Kilkishen FÁS scheme, the Mills was left without a full replacement.

Speaking about the announcement that sees the return of the community service, Councillor Joe Cooney said, “It’s welcome news that we have the second person back. In fairness, a lot of communities in East Clare are after getting a number of FÁS workers. Ogonnolloe recently got two new workers and they never had a scheme.”

He explained that O’Callaghan’s Mills had its own scheme at one stage but when these new guidelines were introduced, it was subsumed into the Kilkishen FÁS scheme.

“We put a lot of pressure on to get our one worker back on a scheme here again. The village is entitled to it, it’s a big village and there is a lot of work that needs to be done, such as grass cutting, hedge trimming, the building/refurbishment of stonewalls, cleaning the community facilities such as the handball alley and the community centre. A lot of these works have been done voluntarily up until now so it will ease the pressure locally and it is welcome news we have them back in the village,” Councillor Cooney said.

The two workers have been assigned for a 12-month period to the scheme in O’Callaghan’s Mills but Councillor Cooney said when this term is up the community council will reapply to maintain this community service.

Also speaking about the two new appointments under the community employment scheme, Eamon Cooney, chairman of the O’Callaghan’s Mills Community Council, said, “We have a lot of work that needs to be done so when the place came up for two FÁS workers, we said we would apply. One has been here for the last few weeks and the second person started this week.”
