NEW work and some relatively new artists will be on display in Blueberry Art Gallery, Ennis Road, Limerick for the next month.  The exhibition Five by Five will include a selection of paintings by five of Limerick’s leading ladies including Margaret Ray, Nuala Reddan, Orla Clancy, Gerardine O’Leary and Rosaleen Shannon.
According to Blueberry Art Gallery proprietor Maurice Clarke, “The idea behind the gallery is to build on the relationships we have with a number of local artists whose work is now featured and to open the gallery to new artists. The specific aim of the gallery is to serve the needs of the Limerick community through the means of visual art and the Five by Five exhibition is just one example of how we are achieving this”.
Rosaleen Shannon, one of the Five by Five ladies who will feature a painting called Looking out to Sea in the exhibition, began painting five years ago.
“I absolutely love painting colourful happy scenes.  I returned to school to complete my Leaving Certificate and attended Hilary Cunningham Painting for Pleasure. I have now been accepted into the Limerick College of Art and Design as a mature student and will commence the new exciting phase in my life in the autumn,” she said.
Another one of the Five by Five ladies, Margaret Ray studied at Limerick School of Arts from 1966-1969. “I am a member of various art groups and was secretary of Limerick Art Society for five years and have exhibited with them many times. Most of my work includes animals, especially horses. I work mainly in acrylic due to allergy to oil paint although I can use oil pastel and love the freedom of charcoal and perversely, the tightness of pencil work,” she added.
Blueberry Art Gallery also features work by Hugh McMahon, Kieran Carey, Vivienne Brogan, Liam Thompson, Gavin Hogg to name a few and is located opposite the Clarion Suites, Ennis Road, Limerick and is open everyday. Contact 061 323033 for further details.
