A 39-year-old Ennis man was charged with the murder of Piotr Nowakowski at Wednesday’s sitting of Ennis District Court.

Michael Maughan of 20 Stone Court, Ennis was chrged with the murder of the 31-year-old Polish man at 15 Sandfield Mews, directly across the road from Ennis hospital, in the early hours of Tuesday.

Mr Maughan appeared before Judge Patrick Durcan on Wednesday and Friday last.

The accused’s brother, Darren Maughan (21), also of 20 Stone Court, Ennis, also appeared, charged with assault causing harm to Declan O’Dea at the same location on the same date.
Garda Nadine Keane of Ennis Garda Station gave evidence of arresting Michael Maughan and charging him at 2.40pm on Wednesday at Ennis Garda Station. She told the court that he made no reply to the charge after caution.

Garda John Moore, also of Ennis Garda Station, gave evidence of arresting Darren Maughan and charging him at 3pm on Wednesday at Shannon Garda Station.
He said the accused made no reply after caution.

Inspector Tom Kennedy, prosecuting, made an application to have both accused remanded in custody to Friday’s sitting of the district court.
Mr William Cahir, solicitor for both accused, said he had an application for free legal aid for his clients and both applications were granted by the court. He made no further applications.

Judge Durcan adjourned the case to Friday’s sitting of the district court and indicated he would deal with the matter at 10.30am.
Gardaí investigating the death of Mr Nowakowski, who had been staying at 15 Sandfield Mews, are still anxious to talk to anyone who can assist them with their inquiries.

Responding to a call to attend the scene of an incident at Sandfield Mews, gardaí and paramedics found Mr Nowakowski in critical condition at approximately 1am on Tuesday morning.
Having been assessed by paramedics he was being transported by ambulance to Shannon Airport, where he was to be airlifted to Cork University Hospital, but he died en route to Shannon. His body was removed to Limerick Regional Hospital, where a post mortem took place.

A garda technical examination was conducted at the scene and the services of the state pathologist and the Garda Technical Bureau were requested.

Gardaí identified the body as Mr Nowakowski, a single man who had been a resident in Ennis for a number of years. Contact was made with the deceased man’s family and he has one relative living locally.

A man, aged 39, who was found injured at the scene remains in a stable condition at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick.

Investigating Gardaí are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information is asked to contact the incident room at Ennis on 065 6848100, the Garda Confidential Line 1 800 666 111 or any garda station. They are especially anxious to speak to anybody who may have been in the vicinity of Ennis swimming pool, Sandfield apartment, the Gort Road and the hospital.
