THE newly-elected president of Ennis Chamber is carrying on a family tradition, having taken on the role previously held by his father more than 40 years ago.
At its recent AGM, Ennis Chamber elected Diarmuid McMahon, managing director, Sherry FitzGerald McMahon, as president and Gwen Culligan, co-owner of County Boutique, as vice-president. They will both serve a one-year term in their respective role.
Diarmuid will be no stranger to the position, following in the footsteps of his father, Dermot, who served as president of the Chamber for three years, from 1975.
The newly-elected president succeeds William Cahir, of Cahir & Co Solicitors, who he congratulated for energising the Chamber during his term. This, in turn, he said, has instilled a positive perception of the work and role of Ennis Chamber among businesses in the town.
A qualified chartered accountant, Diarmuid is the fourth generation of McMahons to manage his family business, which has been trading in Ennis since 1900.
The business was the first firm of auctioneers in Ireland to sign up to the Sherry FitzGerald franchise model almost 20 years ago, to become Sherry FitzGerald McMahon.
Diarmuid’s ambition is to imbue Ennis Chamber with that sense of innovation, during his tenure as president, but also to ensure that the Chamber offers sensible guidance and supports as the town enters growth phase.
He commented, “Ennis has endured a decade of recession and, for many businesses, recovery is a recent sensation. That said, I am cognisant that some sectors continue to face serious challenges ahead, not least our retail sector. I believe Ennis Chamber can play a strong hand in encouraging and supporting growth of the town.”
He continued, “Construction was the first sector hit by recession and, if we are to see the town flourish, construction needs to be at the heart of its recovery. We have already laid down a marker within Ennis Chamber this year, to support not just home builders but also the construction-related professional services towards obtaining clarity around key development issues, in order to address the housing deficit in the town. This is especially important if Ennis Municipal District is to meet stated objectives for growth to a population of 50,000 by 2040.”
Diarmuid believes he is well placed to encourage that sector to work together to effect change and deliver a positive outcome for the town.
He is also keenly aware of infrastructure issues within the town.
“There is a parking deficit in Ennis, and while promises were made two years ago by the local authority to address this issue, no additional parking spaces have since been created. In fact, we have lost more parking spaces since then. This is an issue our retail members have strong views on and, as president of the Chamber, I would like to assure them that we will lobby on this issue on their behalf.”
New Ennis Chamber vice president Gwen Culligan is already chair of Ennis Chamber’s Retail Committee and, while her new role will see her work across all sectors, she is focused on growing and supporting the retail sector within the Chamber.
“The retailers in Ennis now, more than ever, need to adopt a team approach to promote the benefits of shopping and spending in Ennis. Whether your business is beauty, healthcare, clothes, shoes or grocery, a united front is required to attract people into our town. Once we secure footfall, we can then compete with one another for the business. As business people, we know that competition is healthy. It’s what keeps shoppers coming back to the town.”
She continued “We have a number of very positive retail initiatives in the train at the Chamber at present and we will shortly enter dialogue with our retail members to harness their views, while also examining and learning from the experience of other towns, in order to create a strategy to counter the effects of Black Friday.”
On the tourism and hospitality front, a sector that is critical to the development and vibrancy of the town, Ennis Chamber as co-promoter, with Ennis Municipal District, of the Visit Ennis website and digital platforms, looks forward to unveiling a new digital strategy for the town over the coming weeks, to help it compete more effectively for inbound overnight tourists and day-trippers, including shoppers.
