Launch of St Patrick’s Day parade

WORK is continuing on preparations for the 2013 St Patrick’s Day parade, with a launch due to take place next Wednesday at Hasting’s Cottage, close to Illaunmanagh Cemetery.

The parade is one of the major events in Shannon’s calendar and it traditionally finishes at the town centre.
This year’s grand marshall will be Olive Carey, who is well known locally for her work with Dúchas na Sionna.

Ms Carey has been very involved with promoting knowledge of events at Hastings Cottage during the War of Independence, while she has also worked on compiling local social history.

Work has been going on in making preparations for the parade for some time and the council’s MPC on Environment and Community affairs, chaired by Councillor Vincent Coleman, have been taking a lead role.
