Kilrush council will consider legal action

KILRUSH Town Council revealed that just 31% of commercial rates have been paid in the first six months of this year and it may have to take legal action against those in arrears.

Rates represent 38.4% of Kilrush Town Council’s annual income and town clerk, John Corry, said the council is adopting a “practical approach” with reference to payment plans for rate arrears.
“However, where customers fail to engage to deal with amounts outstanding, recovery of the debt by legal means becomes necessary,” he warned.
Furthermore, 20% of people who rent council houses in the town are in arrears. The town council is owed €10,000 in arrears in this sector.
“This increase in arrears reflects the current economic climate but also impacts on cash flow to Kilrush Town Council, “ Mr Corry said in a report to the meeting.
The 2011 town council budget was adopted earlier this year following the allocation of €559,419 from the Local Government Fund, a reduction of 9.8% on 2010 funding. Income from planning fees up to June 30 was just €387, which is 15.5% of the budget projected for, with a total of €3,172 realised through development contributions.
On a more positive note, expenditure amounted to €909,860 in the first six months, while income came to €985,453.
“This report highlights the difficulties that are facing Kilrush Town Council as we embark on the 2012 budget preparation process. Performance against budget is constantly monitored and managed,” Mr Corry stated.
