Honan feels squad can do better

WHILE Clare were the better team last Sunday, Darach Honan said the squad are capable of more.

“We definitely have the potential to be better again. We’ve played better in the past and I think there are definitely things to work on and we will work on them over the next few weeks.”

The towering full-forward said Domhnall Donovan’s point was the highlight of the afternoon. “Cronin got a great goal but that point from Domhnall Donovan is the one thing that sticks out in everyone’s mind. It was a great score when I was sure the game was gone. It was a great score so fair f**ks to him.”

He acknowledged that he hadn’t that much faith when his clubmate got on the ball. “I wasn’t 100% confident. [Laughing] But I was just delighted to
see it going over.”

Honan felt it would take him a few days to get his head around the draw. “It’ll be a weird feeling for the next day or two but then we have to just get back down to it again.”

He was a bit surprised to hear that the replay had been scheduled for a Saturday but didn’t think it will make any difference.
Fergal Lynch came on with six minutes of normal time left and a comment from him summed up a game that Clare should have won but very nearly lost. “It was very disappointing. Now it was great to get out of jail too.”

He said the Cork goals could have stolen the game. “Cork got a couple of goals and they were sucker-punches. If teams get goals they can really sicken you and, in fairness, a few of the lads came up trumps. The likes of Donny [Domhnall O’Donovan] came up at the end.”

He felt Cork were awarded some soft frees. “We dominated in patches alright but the rub of the green went Cork’s way. They got a couple of scores from frees that mightn’t be frees another day.

“Look it, it’s great to be there for a second day out. If we had an All-Ireland final every weekend, we’d be all willing to play.”

It will be a while before he hurls for Clooney-Quin and he says the club championship will be very late. “Jeez, I suppose it’ll be Christmas by the time the championship is over,” he said.
