Freezing weather causing fewer problems

Car Tourismo Banner

FOR the second year in-a-row, Shannon is freezing through the countdown to Christmas.

However, this year there have been fewer complaints of problems with water, while there have also been fewer problems with untreated roads. While the situation might not be as severe as in December 2009, there is still some nervousness about the situation.
One complaint made last year was that there was a lack of grit available to the public but this year it has been made available at many locations, including Tullyvarraga Hill, Ballycasey Hill, Ballycasey Avenue and Bóthar Linne.
Councillor Sean McLoughlin said while the roads have been generally kept quite clear, there have been problems at the industrial estate.
“So far the roads in Shannon have been reasonably clear but the industrial estate is terrible and I would like to see that being sorted out.”
In a statement, Shannon Development said work has been taking place. “Shannon Development began gritting the roads within its industrial estates in November and will continue to do so for as long as the unprecedented icy weather conditions continue. Our maintenance contractors are gritting the roads on a daily basis within Shannon Free Zone East and West and Smithtown Business Park.”
Councillor McLoughlin said there have not been many problems so far with pipes bursting and that water services have not been cut off. However, he said if water shortages do emerge, it would be important for there to be a service available at key times.
“If it was cut off, I would ask that it be done at times that would be as reasonable as possible,” he said.
Councillor Patricia McCarthy also said the severe weather has not had such an impact so far. “There have been a few problems with pipes but not as many as last year and we haven’t had the water turned off at night.”
She said some people may have taken additional precautions following last year’s cold snap and may have improved the insulation around pipes. While the roads have been quite well maintained, she said there is still an issue with some people driving too quickly for the conditions.
Very cold conditions are set to persist at Shannon in the run up to Christmas, with more very hard frost expected.
