Ennis area Councillor Johnny Flynn said he isn’t writing off his Fine Gael colleague Tony Mulcahy, who he says could take the fourth seat.
“It’s extraordinary to see the huge success of the Labour vote, Michael McNamara has campaigned very well. But looking at the FG performance on the tallies, Pat Breen is first, Joe Carey is third and Tony Mulcahy with a very strong six and a half thousand is fifth. There is a good chance that if Mulcahy can stay in as long as possible he will take the fourth seat. It looks as if Pat and Joe should make it.”
He said that the poor performance of Fianna Fáil is set to be the story of the election in Clare. “What will decide the fourth seat is the distribution of Hillery’s votes. That ultimately will decide it, which is extraordinary in what would have been seen as De Valera’s country, to consider that the distribution of Fianna Fáil’s second candidates votes will decide the fourth seat.”
