Final countdown for Me and My Girl

It’s that time of year when routine goes out the window for all members of Ennis Musical Society. Or perhaps it’s more accurate to say that it’s the time of year that members of Ennis Musical Society adopt a different routine – a routine of late nights, long rehearsals and forgetting about all other interests in an effort to produce the best possible performances from their annual musical production.
Between March 5 – 9, the society will bring 1930s Musical, Me and My Girl, to the stage at Glór for five appearances, commencing nightly at 8pm.
“This is a hugely entertaining comedy,” explains Kate Corrigan, chairperson of Ennis Musical Society, “a sort of collision between Only Fools and Horses and Downton Abbey. You can imagine what will ensue. This show will leave you with pains in your jaws”.
Set in the lush surroundings of Hareford Hall in Hampshire, the plot focuses on Bill Snibson, a London Cockney from the most common of backgrounds. Following a rigorous search, it transpires that, in spite of his lowly upbringing, Bill is in fact the rightful heir to the title of Hareford – a haughty, aristocratic family that struggles to accept his new Lordship and his Cockney ways.
If he is to claim his title, Bill will be required to learn gentlemanly ways and, more significantly, part from his beloved girlfriend, Sally, who is not considered a worthy consort for his new found position. And thus the plot unfolds.
“Best known for songs such as The Lambeth Walk, Leaning on a Lampost and Me and My Girl, this is a show for all ages,” continues Kate who will also be performing the role of Hareford’s domineering matriarch, the Duchess of Dene.
“Me and My Girl presents a story of great intrigue, high tempo musical numbers and, above all, lots of laughs. We believe audiences will love it as much as we enjoy performing it’” she adds.
Aware of these straitened economic times, the society has made a conscious decision not to increase ticket prices for this year’s production. “We obviously need to cover our costs,” notes Kate, “but we hope people will feel that we are being fair in our pricing and that they will feel they have received value for money.”
This is a very local production with the bulk of performers coming from Ennis and surrounding parishes including, among others, Barefield, Crusheen, Lissycasey and Kilmaley.
“We’ve always been extremely well supported by the public,” concludes Kate Corrigan, “and once again, we are hoping for a similar response to this year’s show.”
Tickets for the Ennis Musical Society production of Me and My Girl are on sale at the Glór box office 065 6843103.
