Ennistymon shock Parteen to lead group

Ennistymon 1-15   Parteen 0-16

With their second consecutive win in the Intermediate Championship Ennistymon have moved to the top of Group 1 following a well-deserved two-point victory over Parteen at Gurteen on Saturday evening last.

In ideal hurling conditions the North Clare side dictated proceedings from the outset with county U-21 player Cathal Malone causing all sorts of problems for the Parteen defence,

Malone had four points on the board within the first ten minutes to Parteen’s one and the physically stronger Ennistymon side were beginning to assert themselves throughout the field but Parteen gradually eased their way back into the game in the second quarter mainly through the freetaking of David Small.

Two points from Malone and a further two long range scores from the impressive Dave Kenneally had Ennistymon on 0-9 points coming up to the half time break but the concession of frees were proving costly for the North Clare side as Small pointed a further three leaving the score at 0-9 to 0-8 at the break

Ennistymon were again first out of the blocks on the resumption with a point from Tommy Hogan followed by a like score from Brian McDonagh but Ennistymon were finding it difficult to shake off Parteen before the all important score came from Dave Kenneally eight minutes from time when he blasted a low shot to the corner of the Parteen net putting the North Clare side five points up.

Parteen responded with three excellent taken frees from Small but there was no denying victory to this impressive Ennistymon side who may have a big say yet in the destination of this year’s intermediate title going on this display.

However, it was Meelick who made the better start to the second half getting the first two scores to level at 0-7 each.

Two quick goals for the winners turned the game in their favour with Raymond Bane and Gary Guilfoyle striking the net. Guilfoyle who also had his side’s third goal, moved to full forward for the second half and caused a number of problems for Meelick.

The winners hit 2-4 without reply that, effectively, decided this tie but credit to a young Meelick side that finished strongly aided by a goal from Andy White.
