Delays to affordable housing scheme

CLARE County Council has said that the affordable housing scheme at Cluain Airne is now unlikely to be completed until next year.

Since it was at the planning stage, the scheme has been bedevilled by local problems and disputes.
Shannon town manager Bernadette Kinsella said that although there are delays, the development would be finished within a few months.
“It wouldn’t be unusual in a development like this that there would be some slippage. We are now looking at completion in the New Year,” she commented.
Ms Kinsella said that several different factors have delayed its progress.
“A number of things would have impacted on it. There would have been the wet and cold weather of last winter, which made working outdoors very difficult. There was also a problem with rights of way, which delayed things and the economic situation has slowed things.”
It has also been claimed by residents that almost no work has taken place since the builders’ holidays of last summer.
Ms Kinsella said the provision of parking for existing householders is currently being assessed and the council are awaiting the results of a technical report. It is possible that the provision of the parking spaces will be delayed for some time.
Local woman Nicole Murphy was critical of the council’s level of communication with residents of Cluain Airne.
“The work seems to have come to a standstill since the builders’ holidays. We’ve asked the county council for an update but they haven’t let us know what’s going on,” she said.
